So what cars can you get to avoid stupid prices and get the same sort of thing as scene taxed motors? For example Instead of Beetle Moggie? Renault 4 possible? rear-engined See what I did with the colours. Instead of Caddy 504 Pickup Bit of a poor start but my mind went blank. What can you think of?

A good alternative to a caddy pickup would be a Pony pickup if you can find one. Skoda pickups too. I reckon a Datsun Cherry is a good alternative to a MK1 golf...

Oh and the problem with going away from a scene car is that unless you can adapt bits to fit doing the "usual" mods can be expensive. VW's are great for modifying as you can buy a set of coilovers for £120 and some cheap wheels and have something fairly cool for not much cash.

2CV: Expensive, or at least restored ones are. There does seem to be an influx of 50/60-somethings who are quite willing to pay up to £10k for a restored Snail. Renault 6: If you can find one that hasn't dissolved....

It's not often a Porsche is quoted as a cheaper alternative to a Ford! ;D

Scimitars are FTW. If you can find one that's well earthed.
Rover SD1 (although prices are steadily on the climb)

E - type series 1 E - type series 3 V12. Restored examples fetch a third of the price of a series 1 and are still pretty eye catchingly gorgeous edit to add Datsun 280z has some similarities looks wise

MK2 Cortina... Rootes 'Arrow'...

... the only injury I sustained was a bumped head when I let the seatbelt of without realizing the car was upside down and that's not really the car's fault.
