I want to replace the cast manifolds on my V8 for tubular ones - both to get a bit better gasflow, and to tuck the downpipes right next to the block to save space! I've read about people who've adapted other tubular manifolds to fit their application - I've also been told that most tubular manifolds are custom jobs anyway. Has anyone had any experience of exhaust manifolds (buying / making / adapting / etc...) that could advise? I'm alright with the mig welder so adapting wont be a problem, or even making one from scratch - although the technicalities of this are a bit complex! Any tips / advice gratefully received!

Just make sure they're not too close to the block, or else you might end up rubbing a hole in the manifolds through chafing as the engine vibrates, or worse still, rubbing a hole through a water jacket on the block. I suppose that's common sense really isn't it?

There was right enough. Was it a couple of months ago, or last month? I know it was lately.

Yeah - I'll have to dig out my copy. It gave a good overview but seemed to advise against a DIY job. I know that it is a very precise science and that tube lengths affect power and torque, but looking at the cast ones, I should be able to get away with a 4 into 1 setup as long as I make sure that all the branches are the same length...

One thing I do know is that a 4 into 1 is ok if you want more high end power (ie a higher top speed and more power at high revs) but if you want a good smooth even distribution and lots of low down torque (ie if you want to do a spot of drag racing or Run What Ya Brung days) then a 4-2-1 is what you need.

4-2-1 sounds good - just a bit wary of siamesing those pipes! I could have a go at making one up, and if it doesn't work then go for plan B (whatever that is!). All it'll cost is some steel piping, a bit of mig wire and some gas...oh yeah and probably a few days in the garage! First I have to get the damn exhaust studs out of the heads - half the f*****g things sheared off!

Although fairly expensive if you're on a budget, the huge difference in performance over a home made set up or standard cast manifolds will defianatly make up for the original cost. I've been repairing the cracked exhaust manifold on my 89 Celica GT for about eight months now while I justify the cost of a custom four branch from www.zorstec.net/ But check out the gallery and they defiantly look like one of the best custom exhaust builders in the u.k at the momment.
