Totally left of centre for a Friday morning, Em fancies a Merc ragtop, and I think a 350 SLC would be a good buy. (I think she's thinking more like a SLK but no chance!!!) I think there was also a 280 SLC in the early run of these but hey, what do I know about Panzerkampfwagons. I also recall a 380 SLC I think as well as a 420 SLC, I think there was a 500 SLC done too.
I know they can suffer from tremendous galloping rust in the sills, door bottoms and rear quarters (because I've seen them wobbed full of filler before)
We'd be looking for one with decent fuel economy (25 mpg or better in gentle driving), not too fussed about performance so long as its not totally lame.
Personally I reckon the earlier ones look nicer as they seem to have more chrome on them. Not sure what other differences there are.
I reckon we could bag one for a decent price, appart from the weather being nice at the moment helping convertible prices along....
I reckon we could get £3000+ for the Celica with a good polish and the various little "niggles" fixed. Thats got to get us close to a SLC?
Any other thoughts for a soft top cruiser with the "right" vibe?
Needs to be reliable as hell as it would be replacing the Toyota

Oh, the SL is 2 seats only? I thought they were all 2+2....
Can anyone recommend a reliable vaguely posh convertible with 2+2 or 4 seats, 25-30 MPG ideally, available for £3000-£4000 in decent shape. Not a Stag.

I'll have to check again but wikkipedia says they are 2 seaters (only the hardtop SLC is a 2+2) and the eBay ones I saw didn't look to have a back seat of any use.
Pug is a nice car, a bit masculine looking for the wifeymobile though. Not exactly common either! Saw a nice 304 cabrio on a DVD I was watching last night though.
MGB roadster might be the answer, theres a small rear seat in them isn't there? God I must have seen a million of them and I can hardly remeber what they look like...

SL's are funny animals. Look through 'classic & sportscar' and you'll find hundreds for sale, with prices from £7k up to £20k for the creme de la creme. However, most of these are from dealers who have got them from classic auctions, polished them and taken some fancy pics in exchange for their 30% mark-up. They tend to go through the auction rooms for between 3k for a scruffy hound and 10k+ for the best. Average, useable cars are about £5k via this method.

SL/SLC are called W107 ,thats the mercedes Chassis descriiption. They're good value if you csn find a rust free example in the UK,( not much chance in low price bracket) because the front end is is Pure W114 and 115 .Always check the front the end for cracks !!!. The rearend is the same deal.So if parts for the underside are needed you just need to source the bits from the cheaper sedans. Engine wise, you can choose from the sluggard 280 right up to the 560 SL /SLC. Don't buy a merc if you want fuel economy, buy a golf diesel for that... ;D I have a mate here in Brissy who has just imported a 350SL from the US with a 350 Chev in it.not an easy swap but it makes for a cheaper engine to service. The ultimate retro cars are these..All genny AMG's.

Many years ago I changed my driving style to cope with rising fuel prices; I have now reached the stage where I am contemplating keeping my eyes shut in order to lower wind resistance.
