Well seeing as I've been lurking on here for a while buying and selling cars, its time I contributed to the readers rides with my latest mk2 golf (this is my 9th!). I've had most variations of the petrol ones, apart from a 1.6 and G60, and after selling my early spec GL that I converted to digifant 8v GTI, I bought a rough (but cheap) GTD. I always fancied a GTD, but they're quite rare and don't come up for sale very often. They have a little 80bhp 1.6TD intercooled motor, which is quite a strong engine and can be home tuned with excellent results, and the best thing is it runs better on veg oil than it does with the curse word I get from tesco's pumps! Other bonus is it has a complete 90 spec GTI interior, and black carpets Anyway, here it is when I got it.
It was missing a front splitter, the backbox fell apart on the way home, and the rev counter was inoperative. I fitted a straight through centre pipe and a GTI over axle box and backbox to keep it a 2 box system, fixed the rev counter (a broken wire off the alternator), got a small splitter, wound the coilovers down some more, red striped the bumpers, fitted my VW roof bars and fitted a twin lamp grille I got free
Oh and I found these under the boot carpet! I fitted the least illegal ones!
Then I felt the need to drop it another 20mm, just cuz I can!
I got a boost guage, and an MBC, and promptly wound the boost up to 17psi and wound the max fuel screw in a bit, which made it a bit peppier! Then I got brave and took the wonderful Bosch VE pump apart, and shimmed the governor to allow some more max fuel adjustment. The boost went up to a scary 28psi, but it went like a rocket!!! I've turned the boost down to a peak of 22psi now, which is safe and at the end of the little K14's efficiency range (anymore and it'l blow hot air). Just got the aneroid pin to adjust now as off boost its a bit pants haha. Here's a random pic of my MBC and my intercooler, which will be moved to the front when I get hold of a few more bits of pipework.
Then the other day I got a bit bored and fitted the world's favourite catch can
.
In between all this, I woke up one day to see this!
So a little drive up to near Grimsby and a fiver later got me this
Also after stuff being nicked a mate kindly donated a period CD player
The other day I red striped the grille too
And thats about it for now until I move the intercooler up front. I plan to fit a T3 at some point so I can run a bit more boost without blowing hot air! Its easily faster than any 8v GTI I've had, is cheaper to insure, and cheaper on fuel (veg oil ).
Comments welcome!
