I've been tidying up the Toledo in preparation for CARS, the first job was to tidy up some bubbling on the front wings. I sanded them down and found far less filler than i thought i would I prepped them with Grey primer then sprayed over the top coat which has come out Matt, the problem I'm having is getting it nice and shiny and matching the other paint work. Any one got any tips? I've also brought this which i'm making some wooden slats for:

Is it the right colour ? Is it done with a spray can ? Looks like it's hit the panel too hard, have you tried rubbing it down with some fine paper ? I think you may need a longer blend than that to match it up good... what do i know... i just spray satin black !

Ok... firstly are you sure the red is a correct match to your red? It looks a shade or 2 darker in the pic. secondly- did you let the primer cure before applying the red? Did you do it all with rattle cans? You may find that to get it shiny you need to apply some heavier coats. Take your time and build up from what you have already. Also,a bit of advice to avoid the tape lines where your new paint finishes- mask out a wider portion and don't worry about spraying up to the line. Then cut back with 1500 grit wet paper when its cured. If you're using rattle cans I would recommend leaving a few days for all the solvents to evaporate before cutting and buffing. As for the cutting and buffing i would recommend you start with 1500grit wet paper, cut in straight lines, then move up to 2000 grit, again wet. Then a coarse rubbing compound, then a lighter one (say t-cut),then wax. You should have a beautiful shine then Becuase of all the cutting you will do,it's important to have a reasonable amount of paint on there to start with, see beginning about heavier coats. The orangepeel you're getting is from either having the can too close, too high presure(if you're using a compressor and gun),too dry a coat. hope that helps? lol @ posting at the same time

thanks for the replies, i am using cans, ordered from www.rimmerbros.com so they should be the correct colour, i also did a bit of spraying to the arch and it came out fine: i left the primer for quite a while before spaying over.

Looks like the wrong colour primer to me. I had a very similar night mare with a red Cavalier and that was from using the wrong primer.

I've left it in the sun for a few hours now and it looks slightly better, with the arch i used red oxide primer. But the front of the car does seem a brighter shade of red than the rest of the car anyway ;D i will experiment with 1500grit at the weekend and maybe if that doesn't work, white primer ;D

I'm guessing that grey primer is the right one. White will make it look pinkish compared to the rest. As phatford suggests, wet sanding will help enormously with bringing on the shine, followed by cutting and polishing. Let your overspray go over the good paint by at least six inches, then polish it back. I've got a fair amount of rattle can work to do on the volvo so some photos and quick how to might come in handy. Keep watching!

progress! I'm getting some where now, its starting to look more acceptable. although it does look like the front of the car has been sprayed before in a lighter shade never mind it all adds character ;D might i suggest painting the whole wing? i probably will do eventually when i can afford more paint ;D

Looks like a viscious T-cut and wax session on the rest of the car would go a long way towards hiding it.
