Thanks for looking and for your input in advance - it goes on a bit, but I'm stumped as to what to do next.
I was due to be going on an epic road trip down to Cornwall in the viva and I've got a vibrating issue when you go over 50. I'll try and cut it short but there are some important factors - FYI it's a 1256 Viva HC - obviously rear wheel drive.
About a month ago I smacked the exhaust up so hard trying to get it in the garage that I launched the engine about 2.5 inches forwards into the radiator. After a quick bonnet up inspection of mounts/manifold etc, I swapped out the rad and drove on.
Drove to north Wales and it was flying - doing about 90 all the way (cough, er I mean 65) running the original 1256 and four speed box. On the way back the vibrating started happening - it sounds like the exhaust is up against the car - like a really bassy/whole car vibrating/going to fall to peices if you don't slow down kind of deal. When it's happening, slipping it in to neutral or revving the engine has no effect on the vibration. It was fine up to about 40mph.
To cut a long story short had to get green flagged home. Getting it back in to the garage again was also problematic at 3am, and smashed the exhaust beyond all recognition, further adding to my zen state of mind. On jacking it up I could see the final drive bearing on the back of the box had blown - warped around the prop as it enters the box and poking diagonally out of the oil seal - so there was a bit of play. You could also see where the prop has been hitting up against the gear selector shaft and scored the paint of arounf the prop tube. Also, the box seemed to not be perfectly aligned with the centre on the trans tunnel - probably from me twisting the engine when I smacked the exhaust. (I tapped it back in to alignment with the number 6 hammer.)
Now, after 4 days of constant work and I have -
Took the prop out and cleaned up splined joint/final drive job which you insert in the box (this had quite a bit of scouring were the bearing blew) changed a rear UJ (front is punched in and seemed fine anyway after a 'testing' with a ball joint splitter), Put in a new final drive bearing (bi-metalic ring thing), new box rear seal, greased it up and put the prop back on, new front and middle sections on the exhaust, topped up the gearbox oil - but it still vibrates. It's better - starts at about 50, but still happens.
I've tried swapping the rear wheels for the rostyles as well to rule out wheel balancing, and even putting jubilee clips on the prop to play with the prop balancing but alas, it still remains.
I've got about 5 days left where I can still make it to Cornwall so any input is greatfully recived.
Thanks again, Dave
