Good weekend with being able to spend a few hours welding ;D made up some panels to fill the holes in the chassis at work out off 1.5mm steel did wonder if l might have a problem getting them onto the airplane in my hand luggage but they just xrayed them again few!! This is the hole l had made to clear the auto box...... Finished up looking like this, not too bad don't like to grind too much of the weld back just to make it look all pritty when you don't know how much weld you've got left This is the clearance for the starter motor Welder worked well, but l did find that you had too let it cool down a lot to get a good weld even though it has a fan, but please with the result considering l only paid 30 quid for it

This looks like a top conversion.
I'm considering a rear axle transplant for the future on my Vitesse, but I'm not looking to chop the chassis about too much. Still considering my options.
Incidently, doesn't extensive chassis mods put it into Biva teritory? Not wanting to dampen spirits, just curious!

Hi, going to get an engineers report on it when i'm finished for insurance and DVLA, also as l've cut away chassis will weld frame work above gearbox goint to the bulk head, will give me something to mount gear change to and stiffen up the bulk head stop the door opening when you go round corners and skuttle shake...hopefully!!

Yep the front trunions have gone, and as promised some pictures atlast. All l did was file the spigot down until it just fitted the rose joint, push fitted a rod up the hole in the middle, which normal carries oil down to the trunion and then get a local machine shop to turn up a bit to go on this will be welded to the upright when l'm happy with the setup. Got myself a die to thread the end, not all the way up as this would weaken the spigot. I'll then set the hole camber angle etc on the car without the shocks and springs fitted to the right ride height so it will be nearly 100% right when the springs are fitted with the car weighed down

Heh great build Rob - choppy choppy, weld weld Just sticking my two halfpenny worth in - I agree with Nick, you need to look at those rose joints they're not really suitable for road work. I have an Elan and there's been a fair amount of discussion and some less than favorable comments towards the conversion referred to by Nick, by several engineers. Drop onto the Elan forum www.lotuselan.net/forums/I wouldn't necessarily be put off the trunnion after all there are plenty of racing 26R's doing indecent speeds and failure isn't an issue. Speak to the respected racing fraternity e.g Pat @ Kelvedon or Tony Thompson at TTR Hope that helps Looking forward to the rest of your progress.

Thanks for the coments guys, ;)the rose joint in the picture doesn't look very big but the thread is 5/8 unf which has a Tensile breaking strength of 38400lbs which x0.6 gives a tensile shearing load of 23040lbs. The corning load for a 900kg car at 40mph on a 25m rad corner is about 6408N or 1441lbs so hoping it should be ok even with shock loads . When you look at it the bolt through the bottom of the shoc is only 3/16, ok it is x2!. I did look at using something from amodern car but as most modern cars have struts the bottom ball joint does not take as much loads as it would in the herald set up with the shoc coming off the bottom wishbone. But as with everything the truth will be in the testing ;D

nice mod! its not the trunnions thats the issue, its the neck of the threaded section of the upright that the trunnions screws on to that usually fractures due to weakness "built in" by the factory drilling out the centre for the EP90 lube. the uprights usually fracture at very low speeds, like pulling of a petrol station I have a pair of '66 spitfire uprights if a spare pair are needed. I wouldn't get to excited about those canley trunnionless uprights either. I had a pair......... Matt

Yer, had heard that from a guy who races a lotus with triumph front setup, even when rose joints were fitted and there is not enough meat to cut the spigot of and drill/tap to bolt the lot in place unless you machine a upright from solid . My biggest concern is that the swing arm outer pivot point and the steering pivot point are now at the same place which will be ok most of the time but when cornering it will change the chamber angle of the wheel as the suspension loads up, so l don't think it's the final solution

Last post of the week as will be off to airport to fly home to wife , kids and herald hoping to finish off the welding to the front so l can fabricate engine brackets, will probably make some card board temps and bring them with my 3mm steel to work and do them here ;D But the cross member l cut out to fit the engine is almost done, moved it forward under the steering rack dog leg style, with a reinforcement bar going though the center for added strength but you can't see that because its covered When the engine is in l can sort the buck head mods out

:)got the engine in again, clearance is mostly OK I'll see when it's all bolted in place , OK so cardboard may not be suitable material for engine mounts so got some of this of fleebay 3mm mild steel only 14 pound something for two bits 250mmx250mm including p&p. so got my templates and steel packed it in but hand luggage and flown out here with it will go over to the workshop tomorrow when they have all gone home He he ;D while the germans are away the english will play!

OK last thing l did on Saturday was to weld the bracket for the gearbox mount, got the plate and rubber from ebay looked like new old stock if you know what l mean but when it arrived it was very well cleaned up part from a car. It looked good with a lick of paint on it as the bracket wasn't rusty at all but the rubber was shot due to oil contamination, so need to get another one That's not going anywhere....the workshop should be empty now so it's time to go and finish my engine mounts ;D couldn't bend 3mm plate in my little vice at home. Hopefully get time over the weekend to fit then on Cheers for now.

That's it for now got to download a few more pictures later, will have to find the alternator so l can make new bracket for that as l used the current ones for the engine mount. Cheers.............

OK last post this week-prop shaft offered the sierra propshaft up it's huge! though l could do away with the center bearing (which buggered anyway) and the rubber dooh-nut and just have it go straight from the gearbox to the diff old school style? So phoned Dynoprop down in Romford and he confirmed that would be OK, so measure it up at the weekend and hopefully drop it off to him when l'm on hols soon . As want to get it running buy Christmas ;D

???dooh managed to delete photos instead of saving them this week bloody grey cell's!! Anyway not that much to report, did a few "where will that go jobs!" sort out where everything will have to go in the engine bay, no space for the old herald heater box behind the engine so will have to be moved and be fabricated from fresh! Had a sort out and tidy up as l couldn't find anything! and started to fabricate the trans tunnel. Oh got rid of my old migatronic welder for 31 quid and my new one was 30 quid so made a profit Will be off work next week so hoping to get more done ;D

some photo's of the engine stuff that l need to put somewhere The herald heater will not fit in it's original place as the engine is in the way and there's no room under the dash to fit one inside the car and l would like to have a heater for winter driving! so going to turn it around and mount it where the battery would normaly fit as this is going in the boot

Was it the orange Avenger? liked that one the rad is the escort one saves me having to find something else and if l keep it simple to one donor car then getting replacements will be much easier in years to come in case l forget what a pinched it from Good new got free upgrade on my phone due to being good customer working abroad and high phone bills Black berry torch thinge.......does eveything......but believe it or not l only use a mobile for calling people and text..........so put it up on ebay and sold it within 2 hours! So was able to buy stuff that l really needed........like this........ and still got a little bit left to finish my ebay buying frenzy!!so should be able to finish off the engine once l have made the the brackets for everything thank you orange ;D
