Hello ladies and gents, New chap about the place (although I've often read the boards), so thought it a good idea to introduce myself. I'm Del and I'm 41. I've always had old cars, some were just old, some were definitely interesting. Now, I have a 1998 1.3 Fiesta and my insurers seem to think that increasing my premium from £466 to £733 is a good deal, when all the circumstances are unchanged, and annoyingly, their insurance mates seem to agree. So, now I'm thinking of getting rid and finding something cheap and interesting, on a 6000 mile policy. Maybe something British or European and unloved from the '70s, or Japanese and interesting from the '80s (I still miss my 1986 Mazda 626 coupé).
So, er, yeah. That's me and why I'm here!

Good work and welcome, only hideous mileage needs keep me in a modern. Something older and British, say 60s Triumph maybe? Just thinking spares availability is often greater than 80s Japanese stuff when it comes to keeping on the road, windscreens, body panels etc ;D

Thanks chaps. I think you're right Bryn, the Brit route is certainly going to be easier. But...I've just had a chat with Adrian Flux, and they reckon that whatever I drive, I'm going to get a kicking, just because of where I live and the car is parked on the road

Welcome along Get a Lada! Spares are dirt cheap, readily available and insurance isn't bad.

I'm 25 no ncb bonus, i can insure my '57 standard 10 with all mods declared (disc brakes, 1.8 ecotec, 5 speed box, different axle, wider steels, stereo) for £180/year, a fifth of the price of my 1.4 astra estate. I think that if you get free road tax it all becomes cheaper, 50's and 60's car are the way forward imo, if your not doing stellar mileage.

Thanks for the encouragement But I live in East London (and not the trendy bit). What annoys me, is checking on the police crime stats website, there have been NO instances of vehicle crime in my postcode in the last six months. So, where are the insurers getting their data? If I can't find something that I can insure for about £500 fully comp, and pay about £600 for the car, I'm stuffed...

Sounds painful... maybe move? (Not an ideal solution but it may net a garage and driveway into the bargain)
Welcome to the site though, if you fancy a random retro there is bucketloads of inspiration here!

Do it, go retro Phone about as much as you can for a classic quote. Cortina costs me £120 at the mo and I live just over the river in cowbot land although I do have a garage. Maybe worth getting on the waiting list for a council garage.

They don't care about crime in your area, they are concerned with people who LIVE in your postcode area making claims against them. The crime (or accident etc) could happen anywhere.

Try Admiral. My policy is £1200 fully comp which sounds a lot, but most companies wanted £1500-2000 at least and many companies wouldn't even touch me, including the specialists like Adrian Flux. I had a couple of quotes for £10k+ which made me laugh. Oh, and be creative with your job title, you'd be surprised how much difference it can make.

I’m with Adrian Flux on my 78 mk4 Cortina. With only one year’s no claim, 26 years old, with a 2.8 and all the other modifications declared (wheels, suspension, breaks etc) and with 7 ½ k mileage allowed I only pay £350. Saying that, I do need to speak to them as the 2.8 is out and a 2.9 cosworth is going in. Doubt it’ll change that much and if so I’ll just put the mileage down a bit. Unfortunately I do have a drive to put her on and the area isn’t bad. You can sometimes make quotes cheaper by getting insured on a friend’s car. Me and the missus share a daily so the insurance company know I mostly drive that, well at least when it’s raining .
