I would very much like to see that minor working. I bet it's quite amusing. I'm not so sure about the 12hp thing though. That surely would have made the tractor the most useless thing ever My thought exactly 12bhp is plenty for a wee tractor if the gearing is right. Most compact tractors like kubota etc are 15 - 20bhp and they are pretty powerfull. Our old Fiat on the farm is only 50-odd bhp iirc, and not much will stop it....

I would have said it was the torque that is the meat in teh pie ie pulling power rather than the out n out bhp

Our old Fiat on the farm is only 50-odd bhp iirc, and not much will stop it.... Those Kubotas are a bit different, and yes they have fine power for their size, i used to drive those sometimes actually as an uncle is rather keen on his horticulture and has a mushroom farm along with many large glasshouses. The kubotas have fantastic gearing and are really nicely designed, but they are not meant to be "proper" tractors they are specialist machines. The BMC tractor however i more likely to have been attemptedly used as a proper tractors, and with a 12hp bastardized a series engine i would not be keen on trying to use it. And i know tractors, particularly old ones have "low" sounding hp ratings and that it's about the torque, gearing and delivery, and i have pull started trucks with a dexta and towed 8 silage bales with a MF 135 which doesnt exactly have a very high HP rating either. I still really don't fancy the idea of putting a 12hp tractor engine in a minor. with the turbo yeah i can see how it'd work alright. But as much as i still reckon it' dbe cool to see it in operation there are far better engines to use such as the pug diesel engined one or the likes of a perkins prima but they're now silly rare

Thats one awesome moggy van! I didn't know they did a A-series diesel engine!! I'm only here as i'm searching for BMC B-series diesel engines as I was suprised to see a B-series diesel engine in our rental canal narrow boat last week!

They also put the B-series dizzle in the Sherpa and a few Farina saloons - good mpg but about 65 flat out. The old Norfolk Broads cruiser that some friends and I went on* had a BMC Commander diesel - 2.5L IIRC. A whopping 50bhp. ;D *Don't judge: instead think of it as a motorised pub crawl.

I can just imagine you on said trip. sat in engine room for its entirety, swigging ale from an oily tankard, fettling the engine between swigs, like a posh teenage fred dibnah

First post, but I feel I have a little knowledge to share here. I studied automotive design in Swansea met uni for 2 years but decided I could no longer stand being in an office I like getting my hands dirty and am too much of a country boy! I'm currently working as a narrowboat skipper or certified boatmaster if you want my official title. I describe it as dicking about with boats and being paid to drink tea! But lots of narrowboats use old BMC diesel engines in both 1800 and 1500 guises, was the one you hired burning any oil? If it wasn't it's a rarity, the oil seals harden and leak for fun! We also use kubota 3pot mini digger engines in the 2 day hire boats we have at work, rated at 36bhp at 3thou odd revs but they're throttled to about 2000 in the boat. Reliable, easy to maintain, run on fresh air and will take a thrashing!

Some of the original users of the engine in the OP And being dwarfed by a more 'normal' size offering

My thought exactly Could it even pull anything if it really had just 12bhp? And if so no wonder the guy had to turbo it, but never mind getting up hills he must have had to do that to allow it to just generally move on level ground! Can pull as much as traction will allow..... you just have to go slower. Most steam traction engines are only 8bhp!!!!! This is great. Need a vid of it running!
