Got a little black panda coming soon and I was wondering if I could make something like this, but reinforce the remaining shell, and add a rollbar/cage. Would it need an IVA?  |

Yes. You would have modified the monocoque, thus losing the car's entitlement to it's current ID. And it would be difficult to get away without notifying the DVLA, since the body style wouldn't match the V5 - you'd be bound to get pulled. AFAIK, notifying the DVLA of a body style change automatically triggers a vehicle check based on the points system. On the up side, as a fairly modern car* it shouldn't be too hard to get through an IVA - the glass, dash, etc. should be up to spec. already. Getting the re-inforcing strong enough for them to pass it would probably be the big challenge. *ie one made well after the type approval legislation, along with e-marking etc. |

I've always fancied the idea of a panda fastback, using something like capri rear quaters, with the 'screen and doors cut down to the same height. Flat glass helps with getting it done. IVA hinders.

To be honest I think that it's an excellent thing that you need inspection and approval to do this. Monocoque cars need their roof panels for strength! You have to think carefully about what you're doing when you start modifying bodyshells as it's very easy to accidentally end up with a deathtrap.

the roll cage replaces the roof as the load bearing structure.... not exactly difficult really. don't think youd have a problem getting it thru if youve done it properly.
arnt pandas already death traps? hardly an n-cap 5 star car to start with is it?

It doesn't matter how much stronger it is, as soon as you declare it as a convertible or it gets noticed by VOSA it'll trigger an inspection, and then it will lose its registration and have to take an IVA test to be re-registered.
