Hi All as some of you may know i built and sold an early mk1 white austin metro that made shed of the week on pistonheads. Well the other day i got a tax/sorn reminder through so looks like the V5 may have been lost in the post and/or the new owner didn't apply for one. The new owner did mention the engine going in a mini so i fear the metro may have been scrapped. As you know with the new stupid v5s you cant just mark a car scrapped anymore it has to go to an "authorised treatment facility" to get a certificate of destruction... Otherwise I'm going to have to register it sorn every year for the rest of my life haha. So has anybody got any idea what happened to this car? Who bought it, who may have it now? If it was scrapped etc ANY info will help. PM me for mobile number if needed. Info on the car Reg : DFC 255Y White mk1 austin metro - 998 supercharged. Eaton engine conversion. Red interior. Shed of the week link : www.pistonheads.com/doc.asp?c=162&i=23051In all honesty if its still together i may be interested in buying it back! Thanks in advance

You can say its been scrapped if you personally broke up the vehicle yourself. But you can't do that, encased the car is still being driven...

I take it you sent the completed V5C to the DVLA on sale of the vehicle?
As you've got a tax reminder, simply contact the vehicle and tell them you no longer own it.
It's not like you're trying to black your way out of a fine, simply state you sent them the logbook and you are no longer the registered keeper. It would appear that, because you have received a reminder, they did not get the V5C, so you would like your details removed as the vehicle keeper.
An extract from the DVLA website is;
If you no longer have your registration certificate V5C
If you don't have a registration certificate you can still tell DVLA that you no longer have the vehicle.
To do this you will need to write to DVLA, Swansea, SA99 1AR giving the:
vehicle registration mark make and model exact date of sale name and address of the new keeper
However, note that DVLA records won’t be complete until the new keeper tells DVLA in writing. Until they do, the police may need to contact you if they have to make enquiries about the vehicle.
I would include on the letter the approximate date of sale, and if you don't have a record of the new keepers details, explain this on the letter also.
It will simply go down on their records as "No registered keeper", which will 'ping' on an ANPR camera.

The keeper last changed date is showing as 27/10/2010. Is this when you got it? You'll need to write a letter to the DVLA informing them you don't own it anymore, providing the details of who you sold it to. You might still get fined for not informing them even if it's their cockup (unless you sent the docs recorded delivery to the DVLA)

You might still get fined for not informing them even if it's their cockup (unless you sent the docs recorded delivery to the DVLA) The DVLA have no power to 'fine' you as they are not a court. They also cannot send you a penalty charge if a document is 'lost in post', or more likely 'lost in post pile at DVLA'. Your obligations end as soon as you put the correct address, correct amount of stamps, and put it into the postbox. Interpretations Act 1978
References to service by post.
Where an Act authorises or requires any document to be served by post (whether the expression “serve” or the expression “give” or “send” or any other expression is used) then, unless the contrary intention appears, the service is deemed to be effected by properly addressing, pre-paying and posting a letter containing the document and, unless the contrary is proved, to have been effected at the time at which the letter would be delivered in the ordinary course of post.It is therefore up to the DVLA to prove you did not carry out the above steps. Non-receipt of a document is not sufficient proof.

Hi,
The first thign to do is just to phone the DVLA and ask them if they still have you down as the registered keeper of the car.
If they have, then they'll tell you. If they haven't then all they can give you is a "No" with no further details.
If they say "no", then it's all good. If they say "yes", then all you do is write them a letter stating that you don't own the car anymore. Send it registered post just to be sure. You'll then get a letter of acknowledgement through the post in a while.
Thanks,
Rich

Thanks, Rich They obviously have Tiz down as the Registered Keeper, as he's received a VED renewal in the post, which prompted this very thread. Tiz, have you followed up the advice in this thread to contact the DVLA?
