We write the year 1969. The anual Automobilsalon in Geneva. BMW presents a breath taking study by Bertone. The Spicup. Everyone cheers, everyone is happy, new design possibilitys lie ahead, freed up up by the spirit of 1968 - and the Spicup spend the rest of it's days in a museum as an example of awesome design. End of story.
No. Not realy. A BMW? Today they say Nuccio Bertone build it on his own, this wild mix of Spider and Coupe ('Spicup'). This green 'thing' with it's evil eyes and bright interior.
With the closing of the Salon's gates in 1969 the Spicup vanishes, track is lost.
We write the year 2008, when the car reappears. Though it was never realy lost. IN 2008, Paul Koot hears a rumour of a strange car with a BMW badge. The hunt for the Spicup is on. And it's history reveals itself.
After the closure oft the Automobilsalon in '69, the car probably stoof in Geneva, bought by a privateer. It's next appearance is at a dealership in Düsseldorf, Germany. A collector swaps his Iso Rivolta for the Spicup. The next set of hands it got into were these of two brothers in the Netherlands.
The brothers manage to make the Spicup road legal and use it for they'r journeys - and as a daily runner. They use the Spicup for about 10 years. After that, the Spicup spends some decades in a barn.
2008. When Paul Koot finaly finds the car, the odometer shows an astonishing 100.000km!
6 months, a lot of money and new tin later, the car is back. It's first public public appearance after 40 years. On the Concorso d'Eleganza / Villa d’Este in 2009.
What I love about this car is it's 'mad' design and it's story. A showcar, a unique prototype with 100.000km on the clock that was put to daily use and abuse. With a rear bumper made of vynil covered wood
