Just ordered an alternator off of www.volkswagenspares.com/page.php?page=Alternators with PayPal. I've got a PP reciept but haven't had any comfirmation of the order from volks-apart, I have called them maybe 10 times with no answer, and emailed, likewise... am I jumping to conclusions that I've been had by some dodgy company, or should I chill out.

They've been going a long while, so I'd be surprised if they've run off with your money.
Customer service is not their forte though in my experience.

I used them a couple of years ago for a couple of doors for my old Golf. Didn't have any problems with them.

Worth pointing out that the above may not necessarily be the same people. The limited company listed on the website was incorporated Jan 2010. though the website suggests they are well established so could have just decided to form a ltd company and there are plenty of contact details and details of associations they are members of should you wish to look into their legitimacy and they are listed on the usual business directories so (without looking into loads of detail), I'd say you're probably alright, they may just be slow at answering the phone... Anyone would think I vetted credit applications from companies as a living or something ;P

Volks-apart used to be based in Footscray until they had a massive fire which gutted out their unit to the point it had to be demolished, they lost a fair few cars and tonnes of parts etc. I think they may have relocated over to Erith marshes with all the other breakers but can't say for sure. Still see their T4 flat bed around as well as their T4 parts hauler so I assume they are still going. They were ok when I needed bits but I went to them directly as it was so local.

Email from Paypal explaining that they were out of said part and a full refund had been given. So a good honest company, just no communication. Need to learn to trust more, but hard with so many horror stories.
