The battery light is not on with position 2 and 3 of the key and when its running. The battery has low power as its not the best at starting. And it does not seem to be charging that well.

Replacement Alternator ordered, a Lucas A127-55, just had a look, going to be a PITA to get out and replace! It involves doing an oil change as the oil filter has to come out!

Received the new Alternator yesterday and spent all evening after work getting the old one out, involved a hammer and some dung-bell shafts Then trying to transfer over the pully/fan to no avail. Had to wait till this morning to go down to my local MOT garage and they did it in a minute with their air guns and swapped the pulley/fan over. Its a lot quicker when you have all the tools! It was bit of a PITA to get out but only took about 30 min to put the new one back, do the oil change and get running! Sorted! I swear transverse engines in small cars are the devils work, would have been a 30 min job in total on the dolomite!

Well, its been a while, since I updated this I am back down to the one car, and the darn'metro' just wont die. I only bought it (£650) for a year or so's cheap motoring and its been perfect, in that year since the last post, all I have had is a new rear windscreen wiper and a new tyre for the recent MOT, no other advisories at all! Its had a lot of abuse, its done two/three house moves for me and a mate, daily hack with over 20k odd miles in the time I have owned it and its been great. Only thing is the rear arches need looking at, there is some corrosion and a previous owner did a curse word job with filler, other than that its solid all over! 1996 Rover 111i by RSdesignUK, on Flickr For the next year, I am thinking of maybe just painting the wheels white, and that it. I was planning on getting a modern on finance if the Metro failed the MOT, but after some thinking, its been so cheap and reliable I cant justify spending money and getting more debt. I would love another classic as a weekend car but again, given how little I used the 1850 even when it had an MOT, not sure I can really justfy the costs of a second car.

You could always get a retro that was placed in between the timelines of the Dolomite and Metro . It has to be said that your Metro does seem to be a great runner though .

Darn good little motors these Rover 100's - our 'hack' was bought for £50 as it was en route to the scrappy; two front arms later and it had an MOT. Did the water pump/tensioner/timing belt as a matter of course, its since had the following; new rad, couple of new coolant pipes, rear brakes, front ball joints, wiper blades and a good service. Now at 107K and four years down the line; el cheapo motoring at its best!

I once owned a 1970 Triumph Vitesse 2-litre with the stock steel wheels, and got hold of a set of Dolly Sprint alloys to fit on it, but came across the same problem as yourself, I.e., the front brake caliper rubbed on the inside of the rim.
I went as far as taking an angle grinder to carve off some of the inside of one of the Sprint wheels, but it took an age, and in the end (probably just as well), I gave up and returned to the steelies.
You live and learn...

The issue with the Sprint alloys is that they are an 'odd' offset for a RWD car, and also quite small inside the rim. Currently looking for some of the 'wide' Metro Steel wheels (13x5.5) and go with this: Metro PS2 by RSdesignUK, on Flickr

Well a year later and its still rocking.
Just had the 2014 MOT and it failed on a Reg Plate Light and some corrosion on the rear arches (sharp edges rather than excess). So found a local chap who could get it through the MOT on the cheap, tidy up the arches and use a bit of fibreglass to tidy it up. Really pleased as that will do me for at least another year and it looks a hell of a lot better. I cant really justify replacing the arches properly as it would have been £600-£700 which is about double its worth!
Still been so impressed with its reliability although I still have this weird issue where the radio turns off intermittentley when I Indicate or Brake, or sometimes just randomly. Or sometimes not at all.

Glad to see this soldiering on. I have a soft spot for the k series metros as my best mate had a couple when we had not long past our tests
He had a 1.4 8v one and I couldn't believe how nippy it was!

Yeah, I do have a hankering for a 1.4 GTa/GTi for a bit of extra speed, but to be honest the little 1.1i is pretty good, and been getting around 48-50mpg in the past 3-4 months. Just unsure where to go in the future, I really cant justify spending money on another car as this one has been so good to me. In the 3-years of ownership its cost me £650 for the car, then apart from tyres (@£45/each fitted) the only spend has been £50 on a new alternator and £150 on this body work for the MOT.
