My other halfs dad had one that needed the arches done and I planned on fitting Metro Turbo arches but just on the back. You could then cut the standard arches out and do away withg the bit that goes rusty. A pair of re-drilled Mini spacer type drums or a pair of spacers and it would look pretty standard.
Sadly the floor rusted and the arches were the least of it's problems.

Yeah, I do have a hankering for a 1.4 GTa/GTi for a bit of extra speed, but to be honest the little 1.1i is pretty good, and been getting around 48-50mpg in the past 3-4 months. Just unsure where to go in the future, I really cant justify spending money on another car as this one has been so good to me. In the 3-years of ownership its cost me £650 for the car, then apart from tyres (@£45/each fitted) the only spend has been £50 on a new alternator and £150 on this body work for the MOT. I'm wrong person to advise because I always throw too much money at cheap cars. As am I. I got rid of one car and bought something else not alot cheaper! However I do feel your predicament and I have ummmed and Ahhhed about it for quite some time (the Mondeo). If I am honest the Mondeo requires about £1-1.5k (less if you are not as picky as me admittedly) thrown at it to get it driving well again, way more than the car will ever be worth : This includes: - a replacement sump (original was cracked during a clutch change and the replacement has always misted slightly near the alternator :/); I may have found a cheap replacement from an ST220
- a Y-Pipe exhaust front section (a garage botched a decat and destroyed the flexi-pipe after market ones do not exist and all 3" flexis I have seen are too long (which is what this has had welded on), and the exhaust now knocks in various places on rough terrian due to this - Post 02 flexi pipes seem to very rarely come up secondhand (ST220 ones are more common but the entire exhaust system is different!)
- Dampers - with 260k on the clock, a rear self leveller is chattering badly and the rest almost resembling the dampers on Uncle Buck's car, making motorway trips fun and even bumpy roads in town; it will still pass an MOT (the bounce test and leakage is fine) but this car did once drive far far better than this
The issue? For the same cash as I would spend and a little more (including what this Mondeo is worth) I would not get something alot better and if my experience is anything to go by I doubt it would perfect to go. As you know the interior and exterior of this car are in surprisingly good condition (no rips or collapsed seats) and it has been very dependable (often going to Brighton etc. and being loaded up). Then of course whatever I buy will depreciate whether I like it or not making the above rectification not seem so stupid after all. You could argue I could get something just as reliable and cheaper but I do enjoy having a large boot to throw stuff into (work stuff, along with the mountain bike over weekends and other stuff) in addition to something is quite refined, comfortable and swift. Thankfully the above task has been taken out of my hands - my sister has offered to take it off me and make it her new daily!

Now its getting darker, found a curious issue. When the radio cuts out (with the Brake Light/Indicator mentioned) the Battery light glows on the dashboard, sometimes more than others. Its never as bright as the Handbrake light for example but sort of pulses when the indicator or foot brake is applied, but only the once even if you continue your foot on the brake. So it looks like a bad connection with the battery or alternator going (its only a couple of years old) but why would it only do it when something related to the lighting circuit???
