Thanks again everyone! At the moment, it's the getting in and out, rather than the ride that's the problem, so I think Micra and Golf might be out. Prairie might fit the bill though...Multipla also a possibility.

Scenic RX4 - I know it's modern, but mine was one of the best 'moderns' I've ever had. Brilliant for getting in and out of....you don't climb up or down, just step into the seat (if you know what I mean?) Such a great all rounder, lovely mile muncher, super practical etc...and looked great too compared to standard Scenics.
If your Mrs is less than 6' then it gives you the option to slam it some to get the height perfect for her (using her health as an excuse to lose some altitude is a winning combo!) and I've always, ALWAYS thought a slammed RX4 would look amazing...those chunky plastic arches could swallow some really nice wheels and the whole slammed soft roader thing needs to be done (I was actually thinking of buying another one to do this with myself)
Very comfy seats, leather, LOTS of toys with the Privilege Monaco version (twin electric slide & tilt sunroofs, steering wheel controlled stereo, climate control, heated mirrors for example), good MPG (I averaged 43mpg with the diesel) plus LOADS of storage places - need I go on? I loved mine to bits and have since regretted selling it.
That's where my money would be.

get to drive all the latest cars good bad cheap and expensive but they do break down even rollers and bentleys hence my love of retros and my choice would be an old or older merc got two older mercs in our staff car fleet and whilst abused by the moron element in our company the mercs just go on and on good choice and I'm a renault man at heart good luck with your search some interesting thoughts coming via other rr members

B3 Passat Estate, winner. but my missus still hates mine!! ;D This.... 2l 8v gets 36mpg or get a diesel and 55mpg, then fit heated leather, nice wheels, coilies and all for around a grand, job done...... I may be a little biased though... I'm on my 7th... Or... Suzuki X90 and put the kids in the boot

I'm going to say it, a lot of people are possibly going to look at me funny, but I also know people are in the same mindset as me and like em. Not traditionally reto, but iconic?!? Defo unforgettable. Fiat multipla. And very sorry to hear about your wife's problems. That ain't such a bad suggestion.

If you paint them green and put yellow tint on the headlights they look like frog wellies, and you don't get much more retro than that.
I still want a pair of frog wellies like I had when I was little.

Or... Suzuki X90 and put the kids in the boot Hmmmm...no kids, so that's not an issue. But they are a bit naff ;D. Terios might suit but a bit modern and out of my price range. Niva & SJ413 a bit too basic. Vitara maybe? I think a trip to a car supermarket and trying a few out is going to be the next step... Grand Move is an interesting idea though.

The mechanic I throw all my 'I'm too lazy to do that' jobs at swears by Vitaras, and has a black SWB fro towing his boat/transporter and is building an offroader from a white SWB.

W123 merc?? Ultra reliable, retro, affordable, good parts supply, plus it's got a desirable badge, always helps sway the argument with SWMBO. I have one for sale about to get a years ticket on it

The missus nan has to get into any car we have, so we get limited too, her hips don't work and she has to be able to slide across seats and spin round to get her feet into a car.
2 things this thread has made me think of:
scenic rx4, go for a diesel if you do i had a 2.0 petrol and as amazing as the car was filling it up wasn't that great. I bought mine with a knackered variable cam pulley for £450 with 11 months mot and 5 months tax. £200 later it was fixed with new timing belt and aux belt. as mystery said you don't sit down into it, you just slide in especially if it has the leather interior/ It was my mrs favourite car, apart from the dent in the wallet at the pumps every few days. Could pick up a good diesel one ready to rock for around a £1k. Also post apocalypse style would go down well here imo.
Fiat multipla's, again wouldn't even think about having a petrol one again, 3 seats in the front is the best idea ever!!! Wouldn't hesitate to own another one, but probably have it just for the mrs rather than me. Little bit lower and imo not as good looking, but big doors for good access.

And I know I'll be looked at funny for this next one, but I haven't lost it honest Picture that on banded steels with some ranger bob arches whatever you do, don't get a multipla, they're awful things. And especially don't paint it green and put yellow lights on it like a frog welly. Only a complete tool would do something like that.

A multipla is full of win ask emdee!, also the parts for them are swappable between the marea, so lowering can be taken care of quite easily, the jtd is a brilliant engine and with a simple map you can see 150bhp+ plus they are so quirky gotta love a multipla
