I've not had this e28 for long and although it's a great car I fancy getting back into something with a v8 in it.
This e28 is the 525 e (eta) and for those of you don't know it was BMW's attempt at an efficient 6 cylinder car back in the mid 80's.
They did this by using a 2.7 litre block with the 2 litre cylinder head with a special extented inlet manifold. The car also an automatic gear box with some weird overdrive freature in it for low revs when you're travelling at speed (the rev counter only goes up to 4.5k). Even though it's a big engine it only has 125bhp, which is about the same as a 520i but it 177ft.lb of torque, which the 520i didn't.
The result of all of this is a theoretical 35mpg. I have to say I thought was rubbish after never being able to squeeze much more than 30mpg from any 6pot BMW I've had new or old however when I drove it back from buying it and I worked it all out I actually averaged 34mpg. Not bad for 2.7 litre automatic.
The car itself is in really great shape. There's no rust other than a point the paint was broken on the drivers side wheel arch. All the wings are good in the right places, no rot on the door, sills, valences, boot lid and it doesn't look like it's ever been welded.
There's no rattle or bangs from the suspension especially from the tricky rear subframe bushes. It drives great and although it's not that fast you could happily use it as a daily and it'll plod along at motorway speeds.
The cars got some odd options on it as the 525e was the mingebags choice back in the day coming with manual windows and steel wheels. My ones got manual windows and sunroof but the mega rare m-tec cloth interior, electric mirrors an m-tec front splitter.
The interiors really nice with no rips in the carpet or cracks in the dash. The original steels have been replaced by 7 series e38 rims with good branded tyres, which I think suit the car.
Everything works including all dash instruments and there's a decent CD player. It's also got a really rare early spline fitment m-tec leather steering wheel, which is a massive improvement over the standard one.
The drivers seat is let down by having holes in the side and base bolster although this looks totally fixable by a decent upholsterer.
The mileage is 119k, which is backed up by mot's going back to 2004 and stamps in BMW service book. There's a ton of receipts for work and parts including the purchase of a timing belt and tensioner kit in 2009.
Bad points are few and far between but there's a dent on the arch of the passenger side wing. I've knocked it out a bit and it'd be an easy repair. There's a few little parking dings and touched in scratches here and there, the roof laquer was flaking badly when I got it so I rubbed it down and painted it satin black until I could get it painted the correct colour. The boot seals let in a bit of water and could do to be replaced. It very occasionally has a miss for about a minute between cold and warm. It doesn't happen all the time but it always passes. I did 400 miles in it last week without any problem but I always think its best to be honest.
I recon you'll struggle to find a better one for the money with all these rare options and if you spent a few quid on it you could be really nice.
I'm in Ayrshire Scotland, Mot's until Feb 2012, Tax Jan 2012.
I'm looking for something like a 4.2 A8, 740i, 540i, XJR. You get the idea. It must be mot'd and not a total shed.
Here's some pics.
