My dad wants to get a small van (something escort sized). I think he should get something a bit retro/unusal so then he can sign write it up with the company name etc. and it will be a good advertisement for the buisness. So far ive thought of stuff like Escort mk3, mk1 astra, etc. Diesel version is a plus but i know Diesel retros are harder to come by. Any more ideas on what we should be taking a look for? (pics compulsary! )

A quick look here might be in order: www.austin-rover.co.uk/index.htm?lcvcdvf.htmIn my experience retro vans over a certain age become rather overpriced because not many of them survive in good nick and the enthusiast is up against companies with relatively bottomless pockets looking for an advertising tool. One possibility might be a Herald Estate. 13/60 estates arent that sought after so arent overpriced. Replace the side glass with metal and you have something that looks very like a Courier van for a lot less than a Courier in similar condition.

Yeah BT used to run loads of Ital vans, by the time they switched to the grey colour scheme from yellow they'd moved over to Maestro vans, apart from round here where they just sprayed them and kept going I'd be tempted by a yellow ex-bt Maestro, with an EFi motor, and then download the old BT font and get the company name stuck on the side in it

My fave ever BT van but I haven't seen one in 15+ years: I think maestro turbo engines drop in as it has Austin/BL roots

I was a BT Engineer for over 15 years. My first van was a B reg Ital and it was bloody awful, I wouldnt have one if it was given to me. In August 1990 I picked up a brand new Maestro. Have to say, for small vans, it was the best I have driven. It was a facelifted version ( upgraded interior) and the little A series was a fantastic little lump, gave the van plenty of go. IF I was serious about looking for a Retro van then a Maestro Diesel would be my choice, no question. My Dad had an ex Telecom HA van which I used to drive about in. Very underrated, it handled great, very precise steering and a lovely short throw gearchange. When I lived in the UK I used to get that Classic Van magazine and there was always the odd HA for sale. 600 quid seemed to be the average price for a nice tidy one.

Didn't the old Maestro vans used the same type of gearbox as a Golf? Maybe you could fit a VW engine into one? I suggest a B11 Datsun Sunny van. Very cheap to buy and reliable. 1.3 OHC petrol so cheaper road tax unless you find a 1.7 diesel but both are economical. Rare enough to be vaguely interesting too. The 1.3 has pretty respectable performance and handling. Bolt in upgrades range from a 1.6 from a B12 Sunny to a Cherry Turbo engine or for the really keen a 1.8 twink or turbo.

The maintainance people at my school have both a Bedford HA and a Sunny B11 van! The little HA often gets filled to the top with paint, step ladders etc and never struggles up the hills!
