MOT testers of RR - Airbag question!

I read that in 2012 the MOT is changing and it will include airbags.
But what does this mean in practice?

7.1.4. Safety belt Pre-tensioners:
Pre-tensioner obviously missing or not suitable with the vehicle.

7.1.5. Airbag:
(a) Airbags obviously missing or not suitable with the vehicle.
(b) Airbag obviously non-operative.

7.1.6. SRS Systems:
SRS MIL indicates any kind of failure of the system.

Does this mean that my track car is going to have problems with the MOT next year? I've removed the seatbelts and pre-tensioners in order to fit harnesses, removed the steering wheel and airbag to fit a Momo, and the SRS system is freaking out because the passenger seat is missing. I was going to take the bulb out. The passenger airbag was going to get binned too.

I know the "rules" are up there in black and white, but so many times I've read all these doomsday proposals from the giant moneypit in Brussels only to find that in practice it's largely ignored or easily worked around.

So, RR MOT testers, is my Merc destined never to see the road again, or am I able to work around this?!

Hard to say without more information.
As well as the 'reasons for rejection' which you've listed above, there will be a 'method of inspection' which will show exactly what is to be checked and how. It will also list any extra information, exemptions etc which may well tackle the issue of modified vehicles, track cars etc...
I am a tester myself but haven't looked at any of the proposed new material yet because in my experience, and Vosa being Vosa, it can (and probably will) all change several times between now and then.

I see, thanks for that mate. I'll not worry just yet then, but I'll put the airbag and other gubbins in a safe place just in case I have to put it all back for the MOT!

us MOT testers are left like mushrooms when it comes to VOSA or new rules

unfortunately its going to be a case of wait until nearer the time of the rule changes to find out

although I'm not sure how we are supposed to know what kind of SRS systems cars came fitted with as 'standard'

The method of test is going to be the same as with ABS - Missing or incorrect components, is the light on. I would assume that if the ENTIRE system is missing then it becomes not testable. I will have to check with VOSA tech to make sure, but that's probably how it will be.

Thanks for the replies fellas. I'm really keen to keep the Merc road-legal, my heart sank when I read about this airbag stuff - Glad to see there's a glimmer of hope!

We're not the only people who remove airbags. A lot of ambulances, minibuses and specialist coachbuilt vehicles have to do away with them for one reason or another. Like a discussion about anti roll bars the other day I'm sure that if the system has been purposely modified to remove them safely then it shouldn't be a fail.
