At the end of the month I'l be on the hunt for a winter runaround, needs to be a family sized 5 door, and preferably a turbo diesel I can run on veg oil.
Now I keep driving past a K plate Xantia TD on my way to work thats for sale, but I need to know; Are these the 2.1 XUD with a bosch pump??

They can be a 1.9 or a 2.1, but either should have a Bosch pump at that age. The 1.9 is the better of the 2 engines, far better on juice, more tuneable, and easier to find parts for. If you run a lot of boost on the 2.1, it tends to throw rods. As for the cars, Xantias are good motors. Not exactly thrilling to drive but very comfy and roomy, great mile-crunchers The 1.9 is easy to tune as well. 90 bhp standard, that becomes 105-110 bhp just by increasing the boost from 11-12 psi to around 18-19 psi and upping the fuelling. You can run more boost but charge temps get silly, so really you need a big front-mounted intercooler, then you can look at 24-25 psi, which is the upper end of what the standard turbo can do. Mod the pump with the 11mm pump head from a 2.5DI Transit, grind the IDA and shim the governor, and with all these mods your looking at easily 140-150 bhp if not more for less than £200

I know all about tuning them, did it all on my mk2 golf GTD and a ZX Dturbo I had It was one of the reasons for wanting it tbh. Plus I want something comfy and reliable for winter, and that can be raised for going over the snowdrifts were expecting this year! Out of interest is there any way to stop them from lifting up when they're running? As in keeping them on the deck while driving? I have to admit they look sick when parked up!

Being a 1992/3 it will be the 1.9 td, 2.1 didn't realy come in until a couple of years later, found 1.9 to be most reliable. Had a few alway put new cam belt on when l got them and aux drive belt because if that fails you loss the brakes!
Things to check 1. Heater does it work, they had problems with heater matrix failure and clogging up with crud due to no antifreeze, and it's a dash out job. 2. clutch if the clutch is heavy then the pivot rod in the gearbox bushes have failed and the stupid platic clip on the clutch pedal will fail and thats a dash out job! 3. Bouncy ride if it bounce around then spheres have gone, not such a big job as they are only 25 quid each a curse word easy to change but you could use it to beat price down. 4.Head gasket, usual things, clean water in the rad walk away, mayo in the oil, poor starting, rock hard rad pipes after a run etc. 5. Suspension should come up within 15-30 seconds anything longer then pump is on the way out. 6. Rust they weren't a big rot box but the front strut tops can rust from inside out causing strut to come through the bonnet, l've seen it! 7.Brakes, the rear brakes can seize up, front can wear out but parts are cheap, remember the hand brake works on the front so no hand brake turns! 8.Should start from cold with easily, if it doesn't then that could be glow plugs.
Happy buying ;D

Oh and yes you can run on veg oil ;D used to do 30% and the lever between seats has hi and low postion for the suspension, but at the low you have no suspension and it will damage the suspension if you drive with it in that position

Yup they all have a control in the centre between the seats to allow you too lower and raise it gets so uncomfortable in the lower position though my 2.1 used to give me 45 MPG on runs my 1.9 would do 65 MPG both ran on chip oil and worse lol i have run 5 xantia's great cars for what they are i have a few parts lying around for them inc an Alcantara set of seats and a set of spheres Just sold my 2.1 td estate for £500 :-( Sold as no longer needed such a big car have to say i do miss the comfort like riding on a magic carpet never felt bumps or pot holes
