the engine doesnt need to come out (Afaik anyway). what I'm saying that is if i muller the sump, it will do to change/repair it, so i need to get the sumpguard sorted asap! i think I'm going to run it from the ARB to the crossmember, as they're the two strongest bits under the front end.
volksangyl, yeah, the wheels suit it prefectly. i knew once i was getting it it needs wheels, but i needed to stay away from anything curvy or coloured, so the fairly angular but neutral ATS suit it well.
hairnet, I'm trying to stay away from the 'trying to make it look older than it is' thing. I'm just going to try to keep it clean and uncluttered, but bodily more or less stock apart from a few smoothed off bits.
ben, yeah alan told me that was done at A52. i think its the clutch hydro system that needs looking at next though as it can be a bit iffy at times. I'm gunna bleed up up and see if that improves things and if not ile do the m/c seals, as its not obviously leaking anywhere.
vitesse6, its outside alans house!

well more progress. its stalled a bit as I'm waiting on parts, but ive been rattling through the machining ive needed to do to get the stance/wheels sorted.
I decided to convert it to 4x100 all round. its only 2mm, but I had it all in bits anyway and was planning to go to studs, so it wasnt a whole load more work, and meant I could loose the wobble bolts (At the front anyway). ive redrilled the front hubs and discs as I had them off, and made a pair of 20mm spacers out of a couple of bits of billet I had laying round as 10mm just wasnt enough once id dropped it more, cos of the camberZ. it now sits arch lip flush with wheel arch. id show you a pic of it but I'm waiting for some mega long press in studs to turn up before its all back together.
for the rear, ive had to compromise so I didnt have to take the rear axle apart to redrill the halfshafts. ive bought a pair of 30mm 4x100 bolt on wheel spacers, which are hubcentric and will wobble bolt on, and ile then convert to studs so that end will also be 4x100 and studded, not to mention a bit wider too- it will also sit the rims level with the arch lip. I'm waiting for them to turn up too though!
and continuing the theme, ive bought some clamps to made up the sumpguard, which will run from the X-member and then clamp up to the ARB, as its the only bit in the vacinity solid enough to mount the front of it to.
ive also picked up a stock (albeit painted gunmetal grey) front grille that alan at left at marks (nitemares racing), and I will be refitting that too.
so, its a case of playing the waiting game now. I hope the couriers are on the ball this week, I'm itching to get it back on its wheels.
the only things I can really do tomorrow evening is re-enforce the upper wishbones where ive trimmed them, make the extended shock mounts, and cut out the steel plate to make the sump guard.

I'm guessing the 4x98 fitment comes from its Fiat legacy? Rake and wheels look mega, it was always a cool car, but now its even better!

john- i quite like the way it drives- even if it is a bit underpowered. compare it to other '70s small saloons (as thats essentially what it is) and its par for the course really. motorhead- i don't really see the need to upgrade, the brakes on these are huge for what they are and how little they weigh! vdubbin- yeah, its all fiat descended underneath really. stupid bolt pattern, stupid centrebore, stupid wheel thread pitch. all easily sorted mind

update time. first up, the aforementioned wishbone mods. had to chop a bit out of em to get it to go mega low. this was hacked out in-situ so i could test for clearance, and i then knew i need to remove 'at least that much'- neatened up- i then boxed them as id removed a fair old bit of steel. 3mm was beaten to shape, laid in, chopped down and buzzed up. pic to be added later as i forgot to take one. this now allows the wishbones to do this- without hitting anything. so its got about an extra 2.5" of downwards travel. so it can go lower the old ARB mounts were now about 3-4" too high and pulled the arb up at a dodgy angle and made it hit the wishbones. this be they(note broken studs too)- they were also getting awfully close to the inner wings, so i chopped em off and cleaned the wishbone up(pic jumps across to other side here for some reason)- ive saved the rubbers and clamps, and when its back together and on its wheels i need to make up some new mounts that weld on and stick down instead of up, to level out the ARB.

so earlier I mentioned wheel spacers. 20mm ones for the front. bish bash bosh klang job done notice the long studs turned up today to hold it all together. hurrah! they looked like this before i fitted em, in case you didnt know- I bought m12x1.5 instead of 1.25, as 1.25 is a pain and expensive, whereas I have tons of 1.5 pitch stuff kicking around to use. for 'tother end, I bought a pair of second had H+R 30mm spacers off ebay for about a third of what they are new(intended for a BINI)- this handily converted me to m12x1.5 at the back too. I machined the centrebore out to fit the lada C/B, then wobble bolted em on. I found some screw-in conversion studs in my huge stash of wheel bolts/studs/nuts, and threadlocked em in so its studs all round now as well. before spacers- after(again weve swapped sides for no good reason, but you get the idea)- some scaffolding based arch abuse saw the wheels not rubbing, then roll it out to see how it sits. pretty well actually........ ^^fitment looks so good in this pic^^ even if I do say so myself I'm not 100% on the rake. it works cos of the mismatched arch heights, but I'm not a fan of rake tbh. we'll see.
