Winter beater, nothing too exciting, bought off eBay for £255 with MOT. Its a 1600 carb manual with the 4+E box rather than a proper 5 speed. The step up from 4 to 5 is quite steep. The car has no noticable power and the handling is kinda wobbly. Its got no options. Non-power steer, manual windows, no rear wash wipe... only thing that seems deluxe is the tilt/slide sunroof (apparently non-leaking) But I've grown to love it very quickly. Its an old man's car, 82 year old giving up driving, so its all dents and scratches and the rear arches seem to be painted in hammerite but it seems sound and mechanically its excellent. Here's some photos the seller put on eBay, I'll take others when I can get 5 minutes. The driver's seat is ripped to shreds and the bottom is hanging out. The stereo is awful the speakers distort badly. It was smelling like a cellar in there but I think that was just because it was parked up since March or April and not used. With some use the smell is gone. I have this itch to paint it but I have to realise my "respray it in a weekend" days are gone. Seems to take 3 months to paint a car now LOL. Other than that - wheels and lower it maybe? I just need it on the road really. Watch this space

My old man had one of these when new, pretty much the same as yours but was a 1.8 and bright red. I painted the back of the drivers seat white when he was painting the house. He was pretty delighted when he saw it....

Can't complain at the price you paid and so little to go wrong. Don't knock the 4+E if I remember the last one i had was pretty good on fuel

I'm glad you bought this. I have a real affection for em!!
My dad bought a pre facelift small bumper model brand new back in 1981. It too was a 1.6 (4speed) and being a VERY early one, was badged an LS. After the first few months the same model became a CL
I will own one one day. Would love a GL5 or Santanna GX5
These Passats are on the same platform as the B2 Audi 80, which I also have a huge affection for.

I would be h happy have one to play with, getting it looking mad for Tom when he is ready to drive.
This one, at the price you could probably afford to paint in a weekend, and have some mates over for a BBQ at the same time.
Pure functional transport, all it is, and all it promises to be.
I think you did well.

That car reminds me a little of my grandad's old Sierra from years ago. Anyway, it should provide you with some giggles .

4+E is fine but opportunities to use the E are limited LOL
I'm thinking paint it gloss black, sort the bumpers out and drop it a couple of inches on P-slots and its a whole sexier looking car

i've probably got spare (but odd) seats lying around and I know I have some aftermarket 15" alloys but they need a couple of tyres tbh. i'll swap for your VAG steelies. (don't care how bad the tyres are, I love them wheel trims)

doesn't seem bad on fuel. Odometer is playing up so I can't measure MPG at the mo though

I *love* the B2's - my family owned a 1.8CL all the way until 2005 - before the timing belt disintegrated The Audi 5-pot and transmission should be a direct drop in...i considered it for a lonnnnng time when i was young

Been doing a little work on the beast. The arches seemed a little scabby so I investigated. Hmm. some filler Otherside not so bad at all. So I decided to try get the rust out, refill, repaint. Easy and quick and should hold a while. passenger side needed lots of work to get anything like (and won't be anything better than "something like" until some subsequent owner welds a new arch on. Things are much better on the driver side priming shows up most of the defects you thought you'd dealt with plenty of them about 3rd try the primer looked OK then the basecoat then clear both sides not looking so bad. There's a really obvious line where I thought I'd been clever and "soft masked" but hadn't so I need to have another go at blending really this side still looks less than perfect. overall result is a cautious WIN so far though

doing this slightly in reverse order as you can see the car above is shiny... but it needed a good clean and polish too looking grey and dead metal rear window sticker fail just scruffy unloved looking greasy black curse word in all the door shuts etc mould in the sunroof, window frames etc. grime. grime dirty engine bay clean engine bay scrubbing mould out with a toothbrush clean door shuts sparkly polishing time typical scratching where previous owner had been cleaning bird poo off with a scourer or something not perfect but much better Looking not bad Shiny all round so went out and took some pretty pictures...
