no plate law and the lost v5

my heap daily 106 diesel failed its MOT test a few days ago rather badly. but ive decided to stick with it as its good for tat hauling and reasonably good on the motorway...

changed the rear beam axle, rebuilt the brakes, changed the front indicator bulbs and the other bits it needed then went to get myself a number plate made.. "oh no sir you need V5 and proof of ID"

opk no problem I thought, came home, found driving license within about 5 minutes and then spent 3 days turning every nook and cranny of our house inside out looking for the V5. TO this day I still havnt found it, now as the car is pre 2001 can I legally run a numberplate on the bonnet as a sticker? I dived on the vynil cutter at work today and made myself one, its on the correct type of background and font is a plain legit style and height? or will I just refail for having a home made plate???

been on google and all the stuff I find seems to say if the car is after 2001 it needs the BS (b***sh*t) mark and the company who made the thing on but previously to that it doesnt?

confused and desperate.. got funeral in eastbourne on friday and really don't fancy riding the monkeybike there

Ebay suppliers will supply `show plates` without the need for V5, etc. Friday may be cutting it fine though....

i know mate.. i have a set of "show" plates on order that could arrive tomrrow but the nearest mot slot I could get was 2 oclkock tomorrow afternoon.. so I'm asking in case I'm wasting my time going down there wearing a stickon one...

Yeah, just stick the vinyl over a normal plate. As long as its's somewhere like reasonable, you'll be ok.

The last few cars I've had had legal font 'ebay' plates with no BS mark or postcode on the plate and they passed, so you'd be very unlucky to fail for that

cheers guys.. I'm gonna give my plate a good clean (its cracked to F and peeling like mad so not really repairable) and stick the temp vynil one over for now and hope for the best...

As long as the background is reflective, you have the correct font, font size, and spacing, and it's a PLATE, it should pass (they technically should fail a sticker AFAIK)


There is ONE thing they could pull you up on... the BS mark/postcode stuff, all applies to PLATES made after 2001... including your homemade jobbie. Just say it was made in 2000, but never fitted

Caravan places will supply stick on letters etc -so you can make your own easily enough

Vinyl plates are fine if reflective, seeing as a numberplate is made from vinyl and then simply stuck to the back of a piece of clear acrylic.

Interesting, I have a shedload (literally!) of perspex lengths - wonder if there's market for DIY numberplate repair kits

again though you need to get around having the bs mark on the plate and postcode, just get the garage to get it for you, our parts supplier never asks us for anything when we order with work
