I've been day dream car building again (busy today) and have come up with a possible way to build the Calibra as Vauxhal should have built it. Buy a solid 4x4. Junk the engine and transmission. Convert the front hubs so they are no longer driven (will parts from there big RWD models fit) thus converting to rear wheel drive. Then fit a V6 longtitudinaly (spelling?) with a rear drive box to link to the rear diff.
A V6 rear wheel drive Calibra. Now why couldn't Vauxhal do that?

Do you remember the old concept pictures they used to draw for inspiration in Sreet Machine was it? I remember they did a Nascar one in there, looked awesome. The Turbo will be very rare as people keep breaking them up for Corsas and Astras. Tunable upto 400bhp and with the 4x4 will keep with tuned J stuff. They will stay witha lot of modern thins as well in standard form. I don't know where this not reliable thing keeps coming from. There are bad cars of everything. Like i say i had 2 and had no real problems. It is not very often that i hear of anything catastrophic going wrong with them, especially considering the age they are now. Remember that they date back to 1989 longer than that in design terms. I would have another one tomorrow.

I think Alistair is right and do agree that they have a pretty naff image at the mo. A bit like Saphire Cosworths.
They sure look good when modified right.

£3000 asking price or £3000 bid up to?
£3K is mad for a Calibra. IMO. You can get a Mk3 Cortina for than and enoguh cash left over to make it way cool.

I think the whole anti-FWD thing will have to come to an end in future, simply because most retros in ten or twenty years time will be FWD. I think the V6 is mounted east-west in them, but not 100% sure on that one... it'd make sense though, as the Vectra V6 is FWD and I'm assuming it's the same engine / box...
An old workmate bought a really minty Probe V6 for £600. I'll agree they're an automotive beige cardigan but I'm loving the idea of a salt flats racer-styled one, that would pwn!!!11! [pub quiz] Wasn't the Probe a re-badged Yank or Aussie Capri? [/pub quiz]

Yeah the V6 is mounted transverse, uses the different F25 box I think.

The Probe is a mix between some Mazda and possibly bits of Mercury Capri from the US in there 'cos that was FWD for a while. Not sure about any Aussie Fords like it. Pass. I've never liked FWD myself but I was surprised how "anti-FWD" people have become recently, I think its a fashion because I used to get the same people telling me how good FWD was and much better than my "dangerous" RWD tat. Now they're all about "yeah street drift get the back end out etc." puhlease. I've had some perfectly OK cars in FWD like the Saab etc. Just my prefference to have the rear wheel spinnin'

Yeah RWD seems to have become a real bandwagon in recent years.
As some others have mentioned we'll just have to accept that rwd may become less and less common and time goes on.

The probe is a rebadged Mazda. Ford were contemplating calling it 'Capri' to try to fill the gap the Capri left but sensibly changed there minds as it wouldn't fool anyone and would cause much unrest.
That £3000 is the initial bid (no bids) with a buy it know of £3500. I haven't bothered looking but reckon it must have either had a lot of work done or is a low mileage one owner from new car.

Plenty of well modified Turbo's around running 300bhp. Let someone else spend all the time and Money on the Engine and grab a bargain. I beleive some people have put RV8's into Calibras and made them RWD. A Manufacturer rally Calibra was made RWD as well but didn't really see the light of day..

The thing is RWD is coming back. Jag, Merc, BMW have stuck with it and so have the Aussies, there are aussie based cars going on sale int he wider world and the yanks are gearing upt o make more and more RWD cars again, the Japanese car getting more into it (Lexus) so there will probably be a greater choice of RWD retro in 15 years time than there is now?

Irellevant of it's image, or underpinnings, the Calibra is a very sleek looking car & I think that they will develop a following in a few years time, especially once decent ones become rare.
I tend to dislike fwd, & prefer rwd (in particular Volvos) because the steering lock is much better - essential imho for parking in London!!

Yeah the reason FWD cars are so popular is because they're cheaper to produce, and are more compact. Like the BMW ads a while back, RWD is more balanced and suffers no torque-steer (but maybe some bum-steer.... ;D)

Here is a picture of mine at a CCC Action Day going around the Track at Castle Coombe. Note that this was before the whole modified car scene beacame Chavvy! ie. before the Fast and the Furious. She had a Tuned up XE with Bill Blydenstein Head, Mantzel Cams, Mantzel Power Cap, EDS Chip, FSE Fuel Regulator and de-cat. Sold her to what i thought was going to be an enthusiast and then he broke her for bits, making far more than the £2000 that i sold her for. He then had the nerve to tot all the receipts and tell everyone on Club Calibra about how i had spent £18,000 on her. I would never have sold her to him if i had known what he was going to do.
