Draincovers/manholes were/are a massive problem round here, Bexley police has the only specialist metals theft unit in London currently. They even stole the brass war plaques from our memorials!!! For each drain cover they steal and get pennies for it cost us (the council) £200-300 to replace! That gets added on to the taxpayer eventually and as they don't pay tax they cost us all £££ per year

They are starting to replace the manhole covers and drain covers with recycled plastic ones now

luckily its not tooo bad around my area, the few we have had have been nice. Ive currently got 2 engines sat down the side of my house on the drive, ones a 1100 a series mini engine and the other is my mates 1300 starlet turbo engine. the local ones had the decency to knock on the door and ask about them, my mum said that they werent scrap but if we did have any they we would let them know and they can have it, they were fine with that

I found out yesterday that some curse word tried nicking the alloys off Mrs MiniDan's Punto.
Was driving down to my unit in it and it was making such a noise. Pulled over and all four wheels had been undone. Two bolts had compleatly fell out, the rest were held in by a few threads and the locking nuts were tight as they should be.
Tried to take them off from a car parked on a duel-carrageway right under a street light. Can't believe how blatent it was. What really annoyed me though is you can quite clearly see my sons child seat in the back, so it's obvious a child goes in the vehicle.

like you say there are good ones and bad ones. and unfortunately the bad ones don't give a damn if the car is used by a child or an elderly person. all they care about is getting money. luckily we've only had a few cases around here, loads of people in the area offering free scrap collection asking for stuff and those people I don't mind, in fact I have a pile of scrap that I'm giving to one of them today. If they only ask then they wouldnt get such a bad reputation. as with most things, there are a minority who ruin it for everyone

It's the normal ploy they use in my area (Northants); they come to your door asking if they can 'buy' something - when you politely decline everything is hunky dorey for the next few days until you suddenly discover that they've come and had it anyway. When they come up your drive to knock on your door, they have no intention of 'buying' whatever it is they're asking about. Instead they're just checking out what you've got so they can make a return journey later. That's why there's normally two or three of them. I had about 20 wheels and 5 engines / boxes disappear last year.

I know a guy with a load of cars who used to have trouble with the local ones until he gave them a free car. Then they must have got word that he was "alright". From the pinkies I've known in my life, there's plenty of honest ones which ended up as friends. But also plenty of dodgy ones too unfortunatly. nail on the head be nice to scrap men, they are only trying to put food on the table. explain why you need that mini door or pinto engine, give them a bit of alli and some household cable, buy the odd piece off them, get a mobile number 'in case you need to ring about some scrap', it all helps to cement a relationship and keep the bad element away from your house or business. All the demonising on this thread is uncalled for and bordering on racism. Sorry but exactly when did 'scrap metal merchant' become a race? As mentioned already why should people have to bribe others not to steal their property?

Had my old cooker taken from the top of the driveway last year. Not the biggest drama, but nobody saw a thing. Could easily have been my LET engine or panels, subframe etc. If they'd bothered to ask they could have had it, but they were sticking their beaky noses where they shouldn't to have even seen it.
Glad I got that as a warning and won't leave anything at all around the house now. I just worry about the cars on the drive, and that's just plain wrong.

we had a series of thefts from the council lock ups last year, only items of metal value were taken, about 20 garages were broken into, cars broken into pulled out and left in the street, as the garges were protected by a steel entrance gate they disappeered over the back fence with it all, possibly loaded into a traveller wagon of sorts.
as usuall, nobody saw or heard anything, imo, its the fear from the witnesses that makes the polices job harder. if we all pulled together and made a stand, I'm sure the police would help. at the moment i rekon they see it as a loosing battle.
on another note, i have regualrly seen a "foreign" scrap collector (and his wife/girlfriend/ddaughter) come round my parts in a rather beaten (read possibly unroad worthy) transit, when i have been working on my car, and to this day i havent and don't intend to give him (or anyone) anything. all my scrap goes to the council tip, regardless of size/value or weight. better to recycle it and put it back into the community than feed these thieves appetites. just my 2ps worth.
