I was doing some research for a piece I'm writing and while looking into Cuban motoring habits I stumbled across this:
Apparently one of a possible pair of Mercedes 300sl 'Gullwings' suspected to be resting in Cuba.
Michael E. Ware author of Automobiles lost and found took the pictures after being taken to a private garage in a secret location around Havana. Since the photos it has apparently been moved.
The garage owner has also amassed a collection of panels and parts for these cars
Toronto based location scout Tony Robertson has heard stories of a pair of these germanic beauties on the island. One was rumured to be in Havanas Marianao district but he couldnt find it. This is where the Columbia military airport is which was used in the 1950s as a setting for motorsport races making it a likely place for one to be resting.
In the 1957 Grand Prix of Cuba there are numerous records of 2 Gullwings entering driven by Modesto Bolanos, sponsored by Trinidad Y Hermano tobacco and Santiago “Chaquito” González. Its not clear which, if either, of these cars the one photographed by Mr Ware is, but it makes want to book a flight with my camera and a spanish phrasebook!!
