As my greed for BHP holds no bounds, I've started thinking about superchargers for the V8. I'm not very up on these - does anyone know how you limit / alter the boost pressure on them? This is all being built in my head at the moment (and will probably stay that way for a while : but I'd really like to do some groundwork. I've seen a lot of BMW Mini superchargers on the Bay - that got the cogs in my head whirring! As they aren't as common as turbos, I was also thinking about truck superchargers - they're gonna be a bit big, but if boost can be limited it could be made to work

As far as I know most modern lorries are turbocharged as opposed to supercharged but you might find one somewhere. Didn't Jaguar use superchargers on their V8s, still do actually, what are the prices on them like?

Try checking online for a Ford Thunderbird turbo. Seems to be the used super of choice for the 6G72 crowd. I used to be one. Not too large but prob about the right capacity for your V8

As fair as I am aware Jag used the Eaton chargers, as did BMW on the new Mini. The Eatons seem very popular.
Also very popular are the Gladders as fitted to the Polo G40 and Golf/Carrodo G60's, these are rumored to be better than the Eatons.
The Eatons are a completely self contained unit, even has its own oil system so they bolt in easier than some others. Boost is determined by the pully on the front and they have a valve to release excess which normal plumbs back into the intake. Another good feature of the Eatons is they have a throttle bypass meaning they wont spool unless you push the throttle down a certain amount.

Thanks for the advice! Superchargers seem to fetch a lot more money than turbos - I don't have the cash for it at the minute, but as a future mod it would be great! Something off a Jaguar would be perfect - or indeed from a Mercedes Kompressor motor! I like the idea of a supercharger rather than a turbo, cos if I went for a turbo it'd have to be twin jobbies on the V8 and would probably work out more expensive than one supercharger! I can get away with a small one because I'd only be running low-boost. The thing that got me thinking was seeing that McLaren Merc SLR - it has a supercharged V8!

I've just been looking at pictures and details of Scania's latest update on their 16 litre V8 lorry engine and (in the absence of any useful techinical details on their induction systems! ) I'm guessing they use superchargers rather than turbos, but I might well be wrong. In any case I'm not sure if the Scannie's supercharger would appreciate being jammed inside the more limited space of a Merc car's engine bay with less access to cool air, or if it would even fit on. It's designed to be put in a lorry engine bay alongside a 500 or 580 bhp 16 litre V8 after all, which makes even your big Merc V8 seem little! (It makes an Imp engine seem like an all aluminum doorstop! )

Those BMW ones seem to be always on eBay, and with little or no milage on them - dunno why! The ones I've been watching have gone for about £120-£150 which isn't too bad (if I had £120-£150! ) But as with everything I do, it has to be done on minimal budget! Then there's the electric superchargers... (sounds of stifled laughter). I think my sister uses one of those on her hair.... REVOLUTION#9: Yeah, they're a bit big aren't they! Would look so cool sticking out of the bonnet though!!! Just before my engine explodes into a zillion pieces!! ;D

Those super chargers are being sold off by Cooper owners who had them converted to S works spec. You get the old charger and head back after the new ones have been fitted, so they flog them off

I'm surprised the yuppie types who buy Cooper S'es and never use them the way they could and should be (I'm not saying that is every new Mini owner, just the yuppie ones, but there are plenty of them! ) know what they're selling to be honest! ;D "Erm, what am I selling? It's off an engine I think! It used to be on a Mini, does that help?" ;D ;D ;D
