"what I did on my holidays"
We went to the NSRA South Eastern Nationals at the Florida State Fairground in Tampa. Nice. 1300 cars of all types - thats hot, rat and street rods... Nicer. There were a few "late models" skulking about the place too. Some class tin and some weird sh!t too.
It was interesting that it was like a dictionary of hot rodding trends and styles. There were every decade of rod building there, 20s, 30s, 40s, 50s, 60s and even 70s Resto-rods and Fad rods, and the tackytastic high-tech rods of the 80s, the cal look rods of the late 80s, the billetmobiles of the 90s, the rat rods and streamliners of the 00s...
There were some oddballs too, from the Dare to be different" phase and beyond. There also seems to be a trend to take a pre war sedan body and drop it onto a modern pickup chassis. OK, I can see thats a quick and easy way to build a rod but in some ways its just not working for me. But then, they've done it and I havent so who am I to critcise.
Another trend is "fake rat rods". This is where we have what is patently a high dollar build street rod which someone has decided to be "in with the in crowd" so have painted it matt black.
And one that really bugs me is some great old cars with some great patina and then they are running on modern billets or similar. I really don't get that. There were a fair few there like that. The first couple I saw I guessed the owner was still waiiting on a new set of cross plys and ran it to the show with modern rims on so he could have it there, and then when I'd seen a few more I began to wonder WTF! It really looks wrong. Maybe Coker have a shorage in 6.00x16 rubber at the moment. I hope thats what it is. A worse thought is that these are proper old school rods that the owners have bought to modernise into billetmobiles... Argh no!
There were loads and loads of Model Ts there, glad to see them still about in force, and plenty in the Fad style too, excellent! even a rodded 1920s Rolls Royce!
Good choice of cars for sale too. Some scary prices and also an autojumble. No, I bought nothing...
Anyway heres some choice pics and then there should be a link to a slide show of the 120 or so best shots I got on the day. They aren't the best due to the light and the fact my dear wife was getting bored and there were people everywhere....
There would be more, but the sun was VERY stong and it really threw my point&shoot digital in to a fit with some of the shiny cars, and then the battery failed on me so this is a small selection of what was there...

Merc lights have been grafted onto and into everything on the planet now and they always look gash. This has a masterclass craft award or something. I didn;t like it.
