This is a bit of a speculative sale of one of my dream cars: a facelift 4-litre XJS. Having always been on My List, I made sure I found a good XJ. However, it's very quickly become apparent that this is very much the right car at the wrong time because A) for daily duties and increasing mileage it's not practical enough, and B) as a project it's both too nice to do anything daft with, but also not daft enough.
This is not your usual neglected XJS however, having covered just 80,000 miles from new and never having missed a service. I've got a box file full of all the original manuals, booklets, two sets of keys and various receipts. Both engine and gearbox oils look like new and there are no untoward noises or knocks etc. Past owners include the chairman of the XJS club. According to the Service book the next service is due in a couple of thousand miles or so.
It's in lovely condition throughout, with just some bubbling of the paint around the sills/bottom of the wheel arches/end of the outer sill. This is NOT rotten, and I did intend to have these bits touched up at minimal cost - I'll be getting this done if it hasn't sold in the next couple of weeks, as I really do love the old thing. With this work done it is, in my opinion, a 3.5-4k example easily.
MoT is until October 15th, and it is taxed until the end of June.
It's got all the usual toys and everything seems to work. The ride has to be experienced to be believed, it has four matching and very recent looking Pirelli P6000s and an unused and original spare shod with what looks like the original P600. I can't think of anything that it needs imminently, and it's just a case of making it proper bufty if you so wish.
MPG on a run at motorway+ speeds is late 20s, and I've been averaging 22 at the moment with a very uneconomic mix of town, traffic and dual carriageway.
Hey, it's an XJS! Neighbours will think you're minted, and it turns the heads of more middle-aged men than Carol Vorderman in her grundies. Whether that is a good thing is entirely up to you.
EXTRA info:
Recent work includes two new front brake calipers, diff pinion oil seal replaced, recon radiator fitted, new front shock bushes, ALL oils replaced. It also comes with all ball joints, bushes etc for a front suspension rebuild (NOT required yet).
Basically, if I end up keeping her then she'll be treated to a bottom half respray to really give the minty fresh feeling and I shall continue to be dry bummed over the cost of fuel. It'll be worth it!
