There's soooooo much you can do to a a Spitfire to improve it.
I drove a standard 1500 once before I bought mine, and it wasn't fast, however, it still made me smile.
It is the archetypical british sportscar experience
The handling can be improved massively. Polybushes and a rear swing spring set up (early ones can be converted) helps no end.
By the time I'd finished with mine - Gaz adjustable shocks, nylon suspension bushes, stiffer springs) It handled like a preverberal go-kart and was extremely predictable.
Engine wise, if you can think of it, it's already been done.
From tuning the curse word out of the standard lump (1300's work best for this) to monster V8 conversions, and everything else inbetween. Easiest swap is probably the straight six from a 2000/2500.
Body wise, they rust. But what doesn't?!
Sills (structural on a Spitfire), chassis outriggers and heel board where track control arms fit are good rust spots. As is pretty much the entire lower 6".
Arches, wings, seam joints and rear valance also go, as with any other car.
Rear deck behind seats is often distorded due to people sitting on it.
The main chassis is usually ok, due to factory rust prevention.(Oil leaks!)
Parts supply is plentyfull and cheap
New Hoods can be had for as little as £140, tho there is some variation in quality.
They're almost like a kitcar. Everything tends to just bolt on, and is upgradeable.
