Hi All, After lurking on here for a while I thought I'd better sign up and show my new purchase, '92 reg Saab 900 Turbo S (LPT). If the pic works I'll stick some more up. Cheers! Steve

yep pics work fine was it a law that saab made that all their cars had to have awesome funky wheels. ;D on a serious note though. what is it about the shape of the 900s that makes them so appealing I love them.

Bit more detail on the car:
Its got 167k on the clock, odd spot of rust here & there, cracked windscreen and very grubby interior.
Drove it back from Northern Scotland on saturday - 550ish miles back to Sheffield, with the only problem being pulled over by the Police just outside Inverness as the car was showing as untaxed (sorted hours before). Had all the relevant docs so no problem there...except the front tires were deemed correctly illegal as outer edges had naff all tread, so they escorted me to a garage to get them done and thus avoiding a ticket!
Pics show it to be quite tidy but needs some TLC to get it looking its best.

Update time - the car, now known as the Chief (see reg plate), didnt miss a beat on the 550 mile drive home to Sheffield. However, since then he has developed a starting problem, doesnt like it when its cold & damp and there is hesitation on acceleration on anything other than light pressure on the gas pedal. I am an absolute novice at car mechanics so I have been trying to diagnose with the help of a rubbish Haynes manual and a Bentley service manual for Saab 900's. I had come to the conclusion that the temp sensor mounted on the engine block was faulty so Ive ordered a new part and intend to try and fit myself. In the interim the drivers footwell has got flooded - I hoped it was water but after lifting the carpet it seemed rather greasy so its coolant. . Got rather fecked off with it being sopping wet so just cut the carpet out and mopped up the liquid. Apologies for the rubbish photos, and sorry to my neighbours for the obscenities uttered. Plans - god knows, sell my Mazda 2, buy cheapo hack car so I have some money to spend on fixing the Chief, convince the missus that I know what I'm doing and its not an expensive folly.

Keep the faith mate, it sounds like you just got unlucky, these old Saab's are usually dead reliable, and Scarabe green has to be the best colour for a 3-door. If I remember rightly, you should be able to change the heater core with the dash in situ, so its hopefully its not as bad as it seems...

its a steep learning curve with old cars, but there is only one way to learn (the hard way)
fear not though, you will get to grips with it all.
am not really a 4pot fan, but these do look quite cool, and a unique shape

Fluid in the footwell likely to be due to blocked drainage via the engine bay. or heater Matrix.

Cheers guys - I enjoy the challenge. Part of buying the Saab as my Retro was that it would be reliable and not stupidly complicated...1 out of 2 then!
Checked for blockages via the interior air box filter but nowt doing so must be the Heater Matrix.
Progress likely to be slow as I have no garage and few tools at the moment.

I also see your lovely 900 has a sunroof - check the drains from this too. IIRC, they go to the inner wing area in theory.

Well, the problem on starting has been fixed - hooray! After consulting my workshop manual and the UKsaab site regards the reluctance to start but running fine after the engine got warm - I diagnosed that the engine coolant sensor was playing up.
Bit of a faff getting the coolant drained, bottom radiator pipe wouldnt come off so undid the top pipe and directed the coolant via a funnel into a tray below. New sensor installed with the help of my new torque wrench (love the excuse to buy new tools!) and coolant topped up and ready to try and start the Chief up.............first time RESULT!!
It may seem small beer compared to some of the rebuilds on here but I am rather inexperienced when it comes to cars so i was doubting my own abilities somewhat. Needless to say I am chuffed that ive fixed the Chief (for the time being!) next job is to try and find the cause of the leak into the footwell every time it rains! oh and the numerous minor surface rust patches in the engine bay and the bottom of the boot, and the cracked windscreen, scabby wipers......

New addition to the family: Not strictly retro, but very fun to drive, handles like a go-kart thanks to the coilovers! I'm quite chuffed with it - and the fact that OH picked it out as a car she would like to drive "its different!" Saab passed its MOT last month too, only a track rod end needed doing, happy days!

Lovely Saab, I'm on my 5th 900 now and they are great cars. Your footwell leak is unlikely to be the heater matrix as I'm pretty sure they would leak into the passenger footwell. It could however be the air intake duct, if you look under the screen on the drivers side there is sometimes some dum-dum sealant that is missing or has become detached around the duct where it passes through the bulkhead. More likely is the sunroof drain though - I've unblocked a few. Try dribbling water down the offending drain and see if it comes out behind the front wheel, if not some welding wire and some gentle agitation will work. Good luck and enjoy.

Have a nosey at the windscreen wiper arm spindles where they meet the body, the rubber squares often leak and let water in underneath. Lovely colour there for the 900, shape is timeless eh...

Don't have to drain the coolant to change the temp sensor. I just have the new one in my hand ready to screw in as I take the old one out.

There seems to be a few in this colour on Sheffield! It's only got a 1.0 engine in but the K & N air filter and daft exhaust sound like they give it a bit more poke. Story behind the two cars is that i was hideously bored with my 08 plate Mazda 2 (reliable but mega boring) so I flogged it and bought the Saab for me and the Lupo for the missus to learn to drive in. Turns out the Lupo is such fun to drive, courtesy of said exhaust and the coilovers that make it very go kart like, is that I end up driving that as much as the Saab. Ideally, after OH has passed her test I would like to put a bigger engine in it, 1.6 should do it, to give it a bit more ooomph!

ours is essentially the same, in that its on coilvoers too, and i agree, they handle great. ours was also bought for the missus, but i end up driving it just as much.
best thing about ours is the remapped 1.4TDI engine- 105hp and huge amounts of torques is just silly in such a small car. way better to drive than even the gti i had a go in, the turbo makes it great fun.
