I've been offered a Nissan Vanette, its a 91or92 Kreg i'm waiting for more details so not sure if its a petrol or diesel or millage, but apparently its got no rust and a full mot up til now it has been used as a bus for a disabled chap. Its at a very good price if its as good as it sounds ;D Whilst i'm waiting for more details any one got any info on them? and any pics of modified ones? I think its this shape: although with more plastic on the front

Definately worth getting, not seen many buses around. I know of a ratty van knocking around Coventry. Its likely to be a square headlamp model, but thats just a detail....

C20 Vannettes as pictured have phenomenal brakes..... my lasting impression of driving one is making it bring the rear wheels off the deck under heavy braking!

I have been ignoring their potential most of the time, do it! slammed rake on widesters + port hole windows and plush interior with sofa bed TV, PC, PS2, and Bar. I saw a late bedford Midi this morn too.

it doesn't matter if it's a Morris Marina or a Toyota Celica - it's what you do with it that counts

I had a Midi, that was a right laugh. I had been looking at Vanettes around town. See a few of the ones with the 4 lights knocking about and looking pretty kewl. Defo have potential. Lets restart the vannin craze from the 70s.

Mmm - I've been looking at the various japanese vans that are about (possible cheap VW alternative ) These Vanettes and the Mazda B[something like 3500?] Both have that cab forward/wheel under the front door design, that I think looks so cool when a van is lowered Real potential - be different.... do it!

I had a Midi, that was a right laugh. Street still has it! Dunno what his plans are for it though. I've been musing over J-vans for some time. The thing that puts me off is the insurance - I've found that they always charge a premium cos they assume that you're gonna use it for work / keeping tools in, etc.

Likely to be Spanish built! They sold well on the Continent, surprised as to how many I saw when I was in Italy. Petrol engine is the old Sunny-type OHV A15, diesel is LD20. They do have a 5-speed (which can't be fitted to saloons, sadly).
Ratdat had one so should be able to tell you more, recall that he wasn't particularly fond of his - tail end a bit wayward?
They did camper conversions on them too.

Yes, I had a petrol Vanette. The plus side is they have a great driving position and are generally pretty pleasant to drive. The A15 actually goes pretty well and I even once towed a car behind it on a my trailer and it managed okay. Fuel economy is good, they're tough and very simple to fix. They do indeed have very good brakes.
What caused my dislike of it was it's extremely limited traction when empty. It would slip and slid around on roundabouts and bendy roads without provocation which my sound fun but it rapidly becomes a pain in the backside when you're trying to get somewhere in a hurry. Also, if you are foolish enough to pull off the road onto grass, start looking around for someone to push as they just cannot get traction to move away. If you were not planning on carrying anything heavy then I'd recommend softening the rear suspension considereably which would definately help. An LSD rear axle would be good too.
I'd still have another Vanette but I'd definately make some changes to it as it was lethal in the winter which kind of took some of the fun away after a while.
If your's is a diesel I have a spare turbo and manifold for one of those engines so you could convert to a TD. N/A LD20D engines are very slow.
