Back in early March a friend of mine mentioned that he was looking to sell his Golf as would be losing the storage space. He had owned it for 10 years and for the last 5 it had been stored in his mum's garage.
I had always liked the car and it had been a few years since I last had a project car. I was going on holiday to Madrid so the deal was done and I had it transported to my house a few hours before flying out.
I was now the 4th owner of a very original Oak Green 16V GTI with 126k miles on the clock ;D
It lay in the driveway until I came home and gave it a quick wash.
Seats out and hoovered.
All cleaned and back in.
I started making a list of what I wanted to replace on the car. Feeling brave, on with the trade plates and some fresh fuel and made the 17 mile trip to my dad's workshop. It's first journey under it's own power in over 5 years.
Before setting off.
Took the 8x15" BBS RM's off to be repolished and put the original BBS RA's back on.
Thinking of possibly polishing and refitting the original outer dishes.
I bought a load of parts and got a bit carried away and forgot to take many photos but the following was carried out.
AP 60/30 suspension kit
Front and rear top mounts
Front and rear disks and pads
All new hard and flexi brake pipes
Radiator, hoses, water pump, thermostat
Timing belt kit
Alternator & power steering belt
Oil, fuel and air filter
Spark plugs
I refitted the original 4 lamp grille and spent a day polishing and waxing and it was ready for it's first MOT since 2006 which it passed with no advisories ;D
Cool NOS 16V key
Now taxed and insured i've been enjoying driving it as often as possible.
Still got a few jobs left to do, new throttle and clutch cables, pre 2001 numberplates, change the heater matrix and change the tailgate as it is a bit scabby around the number plate and rebuild the splitrims.
