Up for sale is my treasured and original 1989 Mk1 MR2, in red.
It has 132k on the clock, drives like it's on 32k. It's in very good condition, it's not concourse, but is certainly in much better condition than many I've seen.
It has 9 months MOT, having flown through the MOT with only a couple of advisories (which I have seen to replacing already.) Since the MOT I've replaced the air filter, new front tyre (with tracking done, etc) new pads all round, rear calipers stripped and cleaned (now working fine, brakes are good and handbrake works, common fault on these). It's not been driven much since and has been parked up (but regularly started and moved) for 3 weeks.
The MOT tester said he was 'extremely impressed' with the overall condition of the car, adding he'd not seen one as clean or with everything so tight and solid.
Bad points: Rear arches are showing signs of rust towards the top and forward edge. Solid up underneath though, so wouldn't be a big job to throw some new ones in there. If I was keeping it within the next year or so I would probably look to getting these done. They aren't too bad at all, but it's a niggle I'd get round to. One of the plastic pieces of trim under a front light will need a little touch up spray as it's fading. One plastic skirt has a slight crack in it. One shock has a little 'misting' but has been this way for three years with no detrimental effect on the car's handling, it hasn't bothered me in the slightest. Front bumper - a few tiny stone chips and minor stress marks, paint not quite as vibrant.
Good points: - The sills were done early last year and are still solid. - The sunroof has ZERO leaks, and opens and closes as it should. - The engine has just had a full service and is running sweet as a nut with new oil, filter, coolant and air filter. - Clutch fine. - Box fine. - Interior in excellent condition, virtually perfect, bar some hand-wearing on the wheel. - All fan settings work, and can blow hot quickly. - 5-way adjustable leather seats (from the T-bar version, cost previous owner circa £150). - Will come with the original Toyota head unit but with upgraded high quality dash and rear speakers (under original grilles) should you wish to whack a modern CD player in there, it sounds superb. - Piranha alarm/immob with working remote central locking. - Recent rear Pirellis. - Recent rear exhaust section. - Original wheels. - All electrics work (central locking, windows, mirrors). - Front strut brace - Perfectly-working pop-ups.
I've had 56mpg on the motorway at sensible speed from it, and when driven enthusiastically it only drops to 33mpg. Combined cycle sees circa 40mpg.
The previous owner was a Formula 1 engineer. He cared for the engine and mechanicals fastidiously, right down to the nut and bolt. The engine runs perfectly, and loves to rev, it's like a little terrier. It has the 1.6 16v 4-AGE engine (stock 122bhp), the dual intake runners kick in at 4,400rpm as they should, opening it up into a raspy little screamer up to the red line. The paint is in good condition and comes up very well for its age, still bright and vibrant. The only rust spots are on the rear arches.
This is a nippy go-kart which handles perfectly. It's so well balanced, and the rear provides so much grip, it's a beautiful chassis. I've owned it for a year and have been incredibly impressed. I've always cared for it, and let it warm up to temperature. It gets you nods, waves and points.
The Mk1 MR2 won sports car of the year when it was released, and sports car of the decade as the Mk2 barge came out in 1990. It is obvious why it won these awards, I can't explain how much of a smile it puts on your face. I should also add I insure this as a classic car for £88 a year fully comp.
With 9 months MOT and with a new tyre, air filter and new brakes all round in the last couple of months, REDUCED AS I NEED IT GONE - IT IS WORTH FAR MORE THAN £800, BUT THIS IS THE NEW PRICE. Car is currently SORN and located near Potters Bar, North London. Call 07889 896791 from 8am-10pm.
