Hi guys, Well my 205 GTI that I was inheriting has not worked out and left me a lil heartbroken. I really built myself up for some old skool cool ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png) Well now I'm soon going to look around for something else and after a few threads on here I really fancy something J and retro. This is just a brainstorming post really, give me something to save and aim for. I thought maybe a Mk1 Mx5 or Honda CRX but not sure. There is a gorgeous Prelude on here that gives me a certain buzz when I look at it. What do you Retro experts reckon? Cheers!

I reckon you are best to keep an open mind and buy based on condition and price. All kinds of odd things turn up.... Thats the way to get into something a little rare and less obvious and make something very cool out of it

^Agreed. If you deliberate look for a specific car, you miss out on a lot of other interesting stuff.

As said above, if you want something cool don't limit yourself to looking for 1 car.
I like to go on ebay and create a custom search by searching for car, then select classic car section, remove the key word, search again. Put max price & sort distance, save the search and go on it twice a day - find some right gems like that.

I might be a little biased, but you really can't go wrong with a mk2 golf, prices are escalating slowly so if you keep one in good order you shouldn't lose money on it, parts are still readily available, many conversions are available, plus you have the benefit of them sharing many parts within the vag group. Theres a massive following and masses of help on forums. (mk2owners forum is excellent) I've had 10 of them now and have become a bit obsessed!

Should be something you want, don't let anybody tell you what to have because only you can know your taste. I really fancy an early k11 micra and when I tell people at work they look at me like i've lost the plot, but there cheap and readily available and have lots of potential.

agree on getting something a tad out of the ordinary cos after a bit of modding or customising you got yerself old school but a one off even by being different in a subtle way youve created your own touch within a retro ride remit

if you want something cheap to buy and run, k10 micra or mk2 polo would be a good start. for something a bit sportier, silvia s12/sunny zx coupe or similar would be a good base.

Whatever you get PLEASE don't cut the springs in half and paint it matte black,it just ruins cars.i like a lowered machine like the next guy but do it properly and ffs don't ruin paint by matting it,it's so last year and just looks like you can't afford a proper paint job. As for choice entirely up to you. Based on my own experience and as insurance doesn't seem too much of an issue: Any vw gti apart from a mk3 8v,slow heavy and thirsty, rust worse than the others. Pug 205/309 are good,306 s16's a cracking hatch same as a xsara 16v coupe. Clio 172,not my cup of tea but rave reviews. J wise I'd say mr2 mk2,celica gt4,Nissan pulsar,200sx,300sx,impreza,early evo, galant vr4. Fords, anything rs but beware the premium price tags and rust rust rust anywhere and everywhere, also mk6 rs2000's aren't IMO a true rs,better off getting an escort gti. Astra gte 16v is an immense hot hatch, one of my faves of the 80's,ignore the fools that say they don't handle, lower it and job done but again their at a premium and rust is also their big killer. Ok that's mainly performance so a little more subdued but still an ace car is an Audi 80 coupe 2.3,perfect engine size for it,quick comfy and reliable they make a great first retro, actually make a really good car by modern standards. Going older I'd still stick to the vw range as the support for them is phenomenal although mk2 gti's etc somehow have escaped the silly premiums stuff goes for at the mo,probably due to surviving the test of time well. A nova 2.0 16v "red top" is still a rapid car and great fun but not cheap again for a 1/2 tidy one. An e30 325i sport with the full mtec get up IMO is still a pretty car to this day, lower with wide bbs and go for the superclean look, the performance is good and a very reliable car with plenty of scope for tuning and styling.

Saabs and Volvo's make good retros. I don't know if you can afford the insurance, but a Saab 9000 full pressure turbo is a hell of giant killer for not much £££. The engines have a well deserved reputation for being bulletproof and I believe the first 100bhp power hike can be had for near pennies.
I'm currently running around in an x-reg 9-3 2.0l turbo convertiable...picked up for £800 needing about £200 of work done to get it through its MoT. Goes like stink and now the sun is shining I can have a proper mid-life crisis!!

I clicked on that and got very excited about what was for sale locally, then I realised that it wasn't using my postcode. A much duller selection appears when I use my own postcode... Some good advice above, expecially some of the unloved 90s hot hatches. I occasionally see hot hatch Xsaras and Almeras on Gumtree for much cheapness, the car mags back when they were new rated them highly but acknowledged that they'd never compete with the Golf GTi because of what we now call scene tax.

I'm in support of the saab idea but you musnt rule out some of the odd ball cars, what about a lada, its essentially a fiat with better built bodywork, install a modern twin cam with it lowered on some steel wheels and surprise all the boy racers in saxos and the purchase price is silly low even for mint ones but at the end of the day it comes down to taste.I own a morris minor for example, i used to hate them, the way they look, the image and the attitude of owners to modifeid ones but ive owned mine for years now(lost count) and i love it its been to 4 rc mag track days and never stops entertaining me and it really annoys morris minor purists,in other words keep an open mind
