I was MOTing one my cars 2 weeks ago and asked the tester if I could still do MOTs voluntarily, he said they had only just been told it about the previous week and showed me their VOSA mag where it stated a test can be done in the normal way.
Nice to see VOSA keeping everyone up to speed.

Hmmmmm. Seems like an excuse to allow police to pull over for a spot check.
Don't get me wrong, I think this mot exemption for pre '60 is a bad, stupid and pointless idea, and it's now turned into "if you mot it you'll pay normal insurance". If you don't then your insurance will rocket". Meaning that the only reason not to mot would be so you could run a car that wouldnt pass an mot. The driver would get pulled everytime they used it because it won't be on the system, and it'll be pointless to drive an motable car without a test because it's now the more expensive option.
So now nothing changes. Without an mot insurance will go up a LOT, it defys logic to drive a car without an mot unless it's not roadworthy, the car still has to be roadworthy. It would be illogical for the police not to pull over an un mot'd car for a spot check!

To some extent I think you're right but the practicalities are that there are fewer police cars around that might pull you over just for a check. Do they have the resources for that? As ANPR is more widely deployed I reckon they might use that but I'm not sure if they can issue the HO/RT check paperwork by post having seen you driving on CCTV. Maybe it varies between local areas but I used to find I was pulled over a lot more years ago for checks when I was riding modern, completely standard sportsbikes on the basis that I was a biker and now that I ride modified cruisers that take liberties with lighting and number plate regs, I never get pulled at all. I've always put this down to there not being the time or the will for the Police to stop and check unless you're obviously doing something wrong.

ok so my dad has a 1960 ford popular 100e ive read in an article from sidevalve new that its cars made pre 60 so my dads 100e was made in 1959 but it was registered in 1960 and has 1960 on chasis etc etc does this mean it still needs to be MOT'd since it was made in 1959?

So what happens if you MOT your pre 60's car it fails and you fix it or not and just keep driving the car without a retest, guess the computer system will show that your car failed a test it didn't need to take?

Depends whether the rules say 'manufactured' or 'registered' Colin
