Righto, some good news... my '73 model Oldsmobile was build in August 1972. I have the build date code on the VIN plate to confirm this.
My V5C says "PLG - reg'd 2001, declared manufactured 1973"
The car is on an L plate (good for August 1972 to July 1973) so I don't need a new reg. I just need to move from PLG to Historic Vehicle.
I guess first stop is the local VRO.
Anyone any experience of tax-exempting their car (legally!)
cheers

I know of someone who has done this. Lives in your neck of the woods too. I'll send you a message of FB.

I've done exactly this with my Manta at the office in Lincoln.
It is fairly straight forward, but DVLA did try to complicate matters some.
It essentially consists of filling out a form to change the taxation class and sending it away with the current V5 to get it registered as Historic, rather than PLG.
The main snag i had was I couldn't prove an exact build date and only that it was built before Aug '72 (registration was Jul '73)
Everyone I spoke to was trying to force it to be registered as built 01 Jan '72 and therefore have to take a new K-plate instead of the L-plate it's had since new.
Eventually a little old lady came up trumps and said that although this is the usual method of registering a car with no definite build date (to stop cars potentially being recorded as newer than they actually are), Historic vehicles are exempt from this rule.
Good luck with it and enjoy getting one over on HM Revenue & Customs... It doesn't happen that often ;D

You can only change tax class at time of taxing and has to be done at a soon to disappear ( late 2013) local office, They will not accept VIN plate decode without cvering letter from an owners club on the V765 authorised list.

Where can I get a list of such clubs? I suspect there isn't an Oldsmobile specific club on that list...
