Just for the sake of pedantry (and because every blog, magazine etc these days seems to employ "patina'd" as a term), I'll point out that something with patina is said to be patinated.

The L reg Beetle and that Mk 3 Golf aren't patinated.
Most folk would call that 'b*llocks rat look'.
Each to their own, but forcing a car to look old is in a different category.

It was clearly too much to ask for this thread to just be full of enjoyable pics and nobody arguing about fake or forced patina. I posted them so it's all my fault. What i will say is that they are both covered in imperfections. Meaning they're not shiny. Meaning they have their own "patina" whether it's natural or not. I love the golf's different coloured panels and the stone chips on the front wing. He has since painted the car and I don't like it as much now. As for the bug, well you have a point but I just went through my photobucket and posted whatever I had that wasn't shiny. Next time I'll be more careful.

For what it's worth the Mk3 Golf looks pretty genuine to me.

No service history required.Patina is something many don't understand. Even if they like it, some can't explain why. For me, that all comes from the transparency and honesty of the car, the personality of the car, it's chatting to me. Talking to me, telling me all about it's life. Showing me the good times, and the not so good. Sharing it's history. New cars don't have that. Over-restored cars don't have that. And forced-dated cars (forced rat, forced patinated, whatever) don't have that. You can't buy it, you can't replicate it - it's not in the detail, it's not even explainable, it's only real when it's alive. This post isn't aaimed at anyone. I'm not conversing on the matter. I don't need to know if you agree with me or not - only you can know if you do.

The Golf had a front end crash I believe and then had a VR6 dropped in it hence the mismatched panels. It ended up all one colour again, so in this case, far from forced.

I don't need to know if you agree with me or not - only you can know if you do. This is the exact reason I have no interest whatsoever in repairing any of the dents, scratches, or bubbly rust on my daily golf GTI, it has tonnes more character than my project GL, and thats because it can tell me more about its life without bullshitting me
