Whats your Great Race? Mille Miglia? Paris-Dakar? Targa Floria? For me its gotta be the Bathurst Hardie/Ferodo/Tooheys 500/1000. These days its a bit too professional, but in the olden days it was a real test of fortitude. To start with the cars were showroom standard and didnt even have roll cages or race seats. Pretty much anything was raced - Ford Falcons, Holden Toranos, Jags, Minis,Alfas, Imps, RX3s &7s - you name it, it was caned mercilessly. Theres some cool vids of the classic years, and if you have any leaded 4 star in your veins, youll enjoy them! ;D Now pics!

For me, it used to be Le Mans, but then I did go for 12 years on the trot. However, I always swore I'd get to Bathurst one day and now I live by the Equator, I guess my distance excuse is getting a little poor. Maybe next year? Did the Singapore GP the first year and that was good, but I lived there then and could walk to the circuit. Need a second third and fourth mortgage to do that again now

I'm with you, I've always been a huge Bathurst fan & have acquired a huge collection of related memorabilia over the years. If its something you're not familiar with, give yourself a couple of hours on youtube surfing old races, you won't be disappointed!

Bathurst is surely 'the' Great Race. I've never been but for at least the last five years (I think) I watch the whole thing live on TV, start-finish. Six hours of joy, complete with a beer or two and a barbecue! Unfortunately this year I might have to miss some of it doing a uni project. I'll have to make up for it by attending next year!

Bathurst is this coming weekend, normally Motors TV show it live which is through the night for us in the UK. I have been twice and it's brilliant, what a great circuit. Plus the museum there is very good too with lots of lovely things to dribble over.

Haahaaaaa you gotta be a Bathurst fan with a name like that! ;D Have you seen the Channel 7 dvds of all the races from '68 on? The modern stuff just doesnt have the magic for me. don't get me wrong, its bloody good, but the 60's and 70's had a lot of privateer teams, runing all sorts of cool old tin. These days its all corporate politeness and correctness. Can you see anyone on the winners podium calling the crowd 'a pack of @rseholes' these days?? ;D

torn between pikes peak (powerful cars, dirt, and lots of windies- whats not to love) and nurburgring 24hrs. think pikes peak just clinches it though. and yes who could forget the legendary Suzuki Escudo ;D
although looking at the old bathurst pics I might be swayed yet

Bathurst is surely 'the' Great Race. To a petrolhead, maybe. It gets pretty minimal coverage anywhere but Australia though. in fact your average guy on the street (in the UK or the US) has probably never heard of it. I think it's a regional perception. In fact your average American will probably be along soon to tell us it's the Indy500. I think if there had to be only one for the whole world it'd be LeMans, I'm pretty sure most "average" people have heard the name. Paris-Dakar might be in with a shout though. Personally speaking though, for me it's the Nurburgring 24h ;D

Personally speaking though, for me it's the Nurburgring 24h ;D I meant that in terms of a naming convention, rather than being objectively the greatest race in the world. In Australia, people (and media/advertising, etc) often refer to the Bathurst 1000 simply as "The Great Race" and everyone knows what they're talking about, hence the title of this thread. I agree that the 24 hour races at Le Mans and Nurburgring are probably even more challenging, if for no other reason than the speed difference between classes. I really love Bathurst, but in terms of the most awesome and death-defying challenge to man and machine, I'd probably have to vote for the Isle of Man TT. The idea of flying down a main street past telephone boxes and trees at 170mph, protected by only 3mm of leather is just astonishing to me. Big respect to everyone who rides it, and to the organisers for being probably the last such lethal event still running in this safety-obsessed age.
