My dad was a keen mechanic, as well as being an AA man, and I remember his toolbox being covered in stickers. I remember all the favourites such as Wynn's, STP, etc. but there's one that I can't recall the name of or what product it was for. It looked very much like Mr. Horsepower www.mascotcartoon.com/images/horsepower.jpg but had wheels, and an exhaust stack, like it was a truck cab (if that makes sense?) and I vaguely remember a vinyl squeaky toy of the same character. Does anyone have any idea what it was? Please accept this 70s-fied Viva HC estate as a thank-you:

Not what you are looking for but your description reminded me of the Dunlop GT Groundhog

That is very, very similar and it could be that my memory is playing tricks...

I have vague memories of something like that too, probably seen it in early Street Machine magazines, sounds daft but would it have been a cartoon snail or turtle on wheels wearing a crash helmet

Oooh, the turtle in sunglasses with a crash helmet sounds familiar? (off to search google!)

Wasn't that Turtle Wax?, A side view of a turtle with a crash helmet and glasses doing a burn out?.

Wasn't that Turtle Wax?, A side view of a turtle with a crash helmet and glasses doing a burn out?. I had a couple of little plastic Turtle Wax turtles with (non functioning) wheels and racing goggles. I'm sure there were stickers in my Dad's garage too.

Mr Horsepower is the Clay Smith Logo, there was a similar logo used by Thrush exhausts

Thanks again for your help, I'm pretty sure now that it was the Dunlop Groundhog, especially as the squeaky toy fits too, but my memory has added elements of Wild Woodpecker! It's my age, y'see...

I wonder if, in 35 years time, someone will take a MK5 Golf to a show with skinny tyres stretched in the centre of period Range Rover wheels, 25-degrees of negative camber only on the back and a 2ft front track, with the bodyshell resting on the wheels/ground? People will point and laugh, call it ridicuous, and he'll say 'i know, but it was all the rage back then..'
