A friend of mine sadly died recently, meaning the car stored in her garage that her brother had been meaning to restore for decades (You know the story... ) has come up for grabs. Very interested in it is my friend's son, who is a car nut of such enthusiasm that he could find a place here, having an extremely well-executed Mk1 Golf that I'm certain some of you will have seen and admired. He has the skills and facilities to take it on and he'll do something good with it. Trouble is, neither of us know much about the model in question, and my friend's brother drives a hard bargain. So... What's it worth? The car in question is a 1947 Morris 8, and it has been stored in a garage under a pile of stuff since the 1970s. It's complete, I can see that, but we can't yet get to it to examine it. When it went in it was roadworthy, but as to what's happened to it in the last 40 years, that's anybody's guess. It could be perfect or condensation could have rendered it not unlike the rusted-to-bits Austin that became ScaryOldCortina's little project a few years ago. My guess is something closer to the latter. Now my gut feeling is it's not worth a lot. Unglamorous pre-war model, but made post-war so lacks the cachet of a pre-39 plate. Has stood for decades so will probably be in a bit of a state. Given that a bit of research shows you can drive away in a very sound and roadworthy postwar Morris 8 for something under 4 grand and this one will need far more than that in work, I'd be inclined to go with my gut feeling and offer the weigh-in price. There are only so many people will want a Morris 8, after all. So what's the concensus? Pile of scrap or priceless barn find? Not this one www.motorbase.com/picture/by-id/2017372856

Oops, shows I haven't been on here for a while, hadn't noticed this new section.
It's not me buying it but the nephew of the owner. I don't know the expectation of the owner, but he's an old car person - drives a '40s Wilys - so probably has his own figure in mind that isn't too "Cash in the attic".
My personal reaction to being asked £750 for a car in that condition would be to walk away though. If someone's prepared to pay that much then good luck to them I say, meanwhile if I wanted a Morris 8 I'd shell out the extra cash for one that works. Been there and done that with rose tinted views of hopeless projects.
I might suggest he offers somewhere between the scrap value and £500ish, see where it gets him.

I think pOG's figure of around £750 seems fair, chances are if 'scrap' money is offered whoever makes the call about the sale is likely to punt it on eBay and take a chance on it making more. Without knowing/seeing a bit more it would be hard to speculate a price I reckon, as you say it could have faired well or not so well in storage. I would have thought with it being a family member the price could be discussed based on the level of work needed, I guess it depends if there's anyone in the family who sees the chance to make a few quid............I certainly found out that a death in the family certainly brings out the worst in relatives.

From looking at them before getting mine they don't go for much in un-roadworthy condition.
Mine was £250 for the complete car less Engine, box, and diff.
4 doors seem to go for less.
I'd say about £500 max, but if you want a real idea of a price from someone who breaks them, ping me a message and i'll give you a guys number.

Have you actually read the OP's situation? I'd say £300-£400 sounds like a reasonable price without knowing more about the condition (which, as you say, could be anywhere between very good and absolute nail)

If it were a family friend and he's got the skills to do it I'd Give him the car as long as I got a run in it when it's finished and it doesn't get sold Prior to that
That's how I got my mk2 Rs2000 and I've spent more on it than I would've if it hadn't been my mates (time and money )

Hello everyone.
Thanks Mr herald for posting this up. All the comments are very helpful. I'll see if I can get it really cheap. I can't really afford too much at the moment as I have 3 retro project cars at the moment. ;D I'd say 500 is my absolute limit. My little brother and I plan on restoring it back to original and go to steam rallys with it. We will do as much as we can on our own to keep costs down. It's been in the family so long, I think it would be cool to keep it in the family. When my brother and I were little we used to peek through the garage Windows to see it. I know it isn't worth much but it has a lot of sentimental value and I think the rest of my family would love to see it restored.

Ha ha. I'm working on it. There is a lot of stuff to go through and sort out first. I had a quick look round and the body looks pretty sound from what I can see. Couldn't get any good pics though. I will when we roll it out.
I can confirm it is a 4 door.

Well it has been a busy few weeks but we have finally managed to uncover the car and to be honest, I am Suprise how good it is. Very little rust. Just a few tiny patches at the bottom of the mud guards but it is better condition than my passat! I don't think it will take much to get it running. The interior is surprisingly good too. I took some pics but I am yet to upload it. Yesterday my brother and I had a chat with my uncle. He said his son wants the car. So we thought that was it. Then he said he asked his son where he is going to keep it, how he is going to transport it and how will he fund the restoration. To these questions, he had no answers so he decided we should have it. He said he isnt fussed about how much we pay for it and if we're lucky, he'll POP his cloggs before he gets round to asking for any payment he is funny. I used to be scared of him when I was litte but he is quite funny. My brother and I can't wait to collect it and give it a wash I'll get some pics up soon

Your uncle shares your dad's sense of humour. Do them both proud with the car.
