Weak spots underneath are the front tie bar mounts and the jacking points under the front footwells...amazing there ain't more since Chrysler didn't underseal Avengers from new Avengers are lovely to drive as has already been said.....the engines are great for pushrod lumps (and the 1500's probably the sweetest of all)...and in standard form will run rings round an equivalent Escort/Cortina. Think the GLS has twin Strombergs and is Avenger GT-spec so should be chucking out about 70/80bhp...should be fairly lively even if it's got a slushbox, fuel economy's nothing to shout about though if I remember rightly they put a lower-ratio diff in the auto (3.89??) I'd go for it at that money though, I love 'em. ;D

Lovely boxes then those, nice sharp, clean shifts and engage with a comforting thud (if they're in good order). Ran mine without much fluid for almost 500 miles, didn't mind at all ;D
Quite fun knocking it through the gears, and that was on an 1850 which had a pretty similar 91BHP when new...

I think i'm gonna go for it, depending on how the ebay bidders go, sometimes there just mental!
I have the bonus of it being just up the road from me...
Just out of interest, and i know i aint even bought it yet, but what sort of lumps can be fitted? I imagine the auto's have a bigger tunnel, what power can the rear axle take?

An Avenger's basically a longer Sunbeam......anything fitted in a Sunbeam (put it this way, the rally team I crew on have 230bhp of XE power in theirs) will fit an Avenger....check out the classifieds in Motorsport News every week, always loads of Sunbeam bits in there.
Chrysler Competition Dept even built a fleet of Lotus Sunbeam-powered Avenger estates to use as chase cars/ service barges in the late 70's/early 80's. At least one survives as well!!

Excellent cars. Much better handling than a standard escort. Very controllable on the limit and not as twitchy as a sunbeam. Use escort/cortina/capri type M16 front brake calipers and Ford fit wheels so there are plenty of possibilities there. Before I saw the post at the top of this page I was gonna say that I would have thought the noisy rear was a wheel bearing instead of a diff as the diffs are usually pretty strong.

Lovely cars! I remember my gran having two when i was a brat, one was orange and one was blue. I remember them being rotten but reliable all the same. Been a fan ever since really!

Avenger diff whine is not uncommon, if you can inspect the car before sale then check under the bonnet where the inner wings meet the bulkhead as they tend to rot across the seam and plating over it is a no no.
Also watch the rear wishbones, they rot in the spring cup where mud sits and the first you know about it is when the wishbone snaps.
Avoid any Avenger with a sunroof, the suspension stresses go front to back across the roof and a sunroof seriously weakens the structure.
Second hand dashtops in good nick are pretty extinct, especially for the 4 dial dash models.
Other than that, fantastic car and IMO far superior than a MK1 Scrote.

Someone paid well over the odds for it in the end! £411.89 Good luck to them i say, went and had another quick look and the front where the subframe mounts does look very flaky anyways! Onto the next one, best find summat soon, got my other car up forsale already!
