whilst looking around a flea market i came across this and thought it would make a great retro themed ipod/mp3 dock for camping trips etc. its a pye jewel case valve radio. so i know the purists are going to hang me BUT theres no way I'm getting this going again as it needs 2 batteries one 7.5v and one 90v!!! so everything is coming out bar the lovely chrome front panel so i can put one of these in. a tripath amp along with a lithium 12v battery. ive got a few issues to sort like the amp is 2 channel and can not be bridged and shouldnt be run on just one channel, but theres only space for mounting one speaker. maybe another amp? but these tripaths are high quality sound and power efficent.

Hi, I presume there is a battery in the lid, can you mount the speakers in it's place? The panel that covers it can be modified by cutting the panel but not the covering, to retain the look.

Nice project. Two speaker in the lid?
Where did you get the amp from?

i was trying to keep it looking standard outside and inside, so i was going to replace the exsiting brown speaker with something better. i like the idea of opening it open with only a 3.5mm jack visible, and making all the existing knobs work it. amp is off ebay they are only £20 or so

What you need are some extension handbags... (some smaller bags with speakers in them) or use something like a retro version of the Pringle tube speakers.

Rather than mounting the speaker directly to the front panel, couldn't you mount two speakers to a frame so they fit behind the tuning panel (so that still 'works'), in the space where all the valves and that are. Obviously you won't hear it in stereo, but you'll be using both channles on the amp and getting the volume from having two speakers. Looks like there would be room to mount at least the battery in the lid.

Hi
Any updates on this??
I`m thinking of a similar project and need a suitable amp can you remove the volume control from the amp and wire up the original one from the radio??
Cheers Adrian
