I'm amazed they got that far. Usually the steering lock comes on with the first turn (or turn back) of the wheel on most cars I've had.

Yeah it did look weird how the steering lock didn't come on for a long time.

It was also weird how the tow car DIDNT STOP!!

From what I remember reading, that's what caught them out. I don't remember the full details but because the wheel was turning they didn't think to check.

The guy recons he knocked the key out of position with his knee at some point. The guy who had just mapped it (Andy Forest) was in the back of the Land Rover and he's given his full description of the events. Apparantly the Land Rover was fully loaded (5 people + kit), and towing the subaru, that could easily be 4 tonnes, so I expect that little bit of extra effort to drag it along the grass would go virtually unnoticed.

I'm really not a fan of towing - it was one of those classic incidents where someone tried crossing the road between me and the AA truck that was towing me that really put me off!

Being town through Birmingham's rush hour is NOT any fun at all. I will never do that again!

I hate being towed. I remember an incident last year when I was in a Bentley Turbo with no brakes and no power steering being towed by a brand spanking new LWB Hire Van. Luckily, we weren't going very far but it was frightening to say the least!!

"We towed the car back to the workshop using Jons new Landrover Discovery, the latest one with the 3.0 ltr V6 Jaguar 190bhp TD unit. This is one impressive power unit, with the massive torque coupled to the sports auto box we were hardly aware of the impreza behind us.
As we rounded one of the many tight bends Jon accelerated hard up the next hill, Jon then calls out “ where the F*** has he gone now ?” having lost the scoob in his mirrors. I looked out the side window and to my horror seen the Impreza almost alongside us…… but in the ditch to our left….. I shouted at Jon to stop but it was too late as the Impreza met with a solid 18” diameter power cable support pole.
Daniels father Chris was driving the Impreza whilst under tow, what had happened was the ignition key had not been turned fully to the ‘1’ position before starting off. On the Impreza the steering lock does not engage until the key is fully withdrawn BUT it also doesn’t actually disable the lock until it is initially turned to the 1 position. This had not been done and the first time the driver needed more than half a turn of steering …… the steering lock engaged throwing the car into the ditch. Daniel and Chris were ok, just badly bruised shoulders from the harness straps, the car however was not so well, with the engine pushed back a few inches, enough to bend the propshaft.
Initial inspection shows that the bumper/intercooler/rad and headers took the brunt of the hit and the main engine block and gearbox seem to have survived.
Jon, whilst initially gutted, coped fairly well with the situation and has taken it as an opportunity to undertake further upgrades and body lightening mods ! Such is the way of living with an extreme Impreza.

I once saw an intersting accident where a car towing another car on a fairly long rope (years ago, when a simple rope was 'enough') turned left at a crossroads, and a plank in a car oncoming turned right between the two cars!

Ha ha, my dad once pulled the key out of the ignition of his Bedford CF while driving, to scratch his ear with it! Of course the steering lock came on, causing him to whang towards some hapless oncoming traffic. The key was snapped halfway down so you could pull it out without turning it (and thus without switching the engine off). ;D

That's pretty shocking. A nightmare scenario! I thought the car had turned over but it was just the camera.

I hate being towed for two reasons:
1) You're at the mercy of the guy driving the tow car
2) It means the car is broken. Never good.
