Right, please be patient with me on this one, I know less than zero about computers! I have a silly idea for part of a project I'm planning and it involves a computer, a touch screen and some simple graphics that can be controlled through the touchscreen. Imagine like the interface of an iPhone or one of those car computer things where you have little icons that open up new pages when they are touched on the screen. I am more than capable of designing the graphics, but I don't even know where to start when it comes to the software side of things? Is it even possible for someone with my low intellect for computer witchcraft? I won't need the softward to perform any real function, imagine it's like a 'fake' display! It's hard to explain without giving it away. I just need to be able to make a screen with some icons and graphics on it open up new screens when you touch certain icons. Is this possible? Does anyone know some very, very cheap, ideally free software that a dummy like me could get my head around? Any help or advice would be very gratefully accepted. Many thanks.

To get a standard A40 this low, you'd have to dig a hole to put it in

Easiest thing would be to make it as a website and run a browser full-screen without toolbars on the touchscreen.

hang on, you mean running on a regular computer rather than an embedded device somewhere? heh.. I'm tempted to say Powerpoint

Yep, this is to run on an old laptop which has a touchscreen. Basically I'm trying to emulate a computer touchscreen interface. The interface needs to look like its working (I.e. when you touch an icon it opens another screen/page) but it doesn't need to run any programs. I'll write a bit more about it when I'm home and not trying to type on a phone while my fingers are freezing while wlking the dog.

would a tablet pc work? I know you can get android ones really cheap these days, there are a few companies that offer free menu touchscreen software too, its designed for bars, pubs, resturants ect but it could still work for you depending on what you want.
otherwise small touchscreen monitor with a car pc setup running linux or xp?
also powerpoint would be a really easy way to make it work

A dummy app in Android would be fairly easy to knock up, a couple of buttons to throw up a few other screens.
Does it have to respond to the pad, or just _look_ like it does?

Right, back home and fingers now warmed up a little!
To fill in some of the blanks, I've already got the 'hardware' side of things sorted and this takes the form of a touch screen laptop. I'm afraid I'm a little too far down the road to change this now (long story, but if I manage to make this work I'll show & tell I promise)
The interface will need to respond to touching the screen, so tapping a certain icon will change the screen to another one (imagine tapping an 'app' icon on an iPhone opens a new app)
I guess in its simplest terms, I'm looking to make some kind of interactive menu system and it actually looks like Powerpoint will be a good start. I guess you can designate areas of the screen/page to respond to mouse clicks? (different areas of the screen opening up different pages?)
My head is bursting with wanting to get started on this so I'm going to have a little play with Powerpoint this afternoon and see how I get on.
Rian, you're not actually a million miles away with your guess!!

I've done a project like this recently and I used the website method. Quick tutorial on some HTML and CSS and a quick tutorial on GIMP and within a couple of hours it was complete. If you wanted the tutorials I have the videos in my Dropbox I could knock a torrent up for them.

I have a Dropbox account so if you're OK with it, you can link me if I send you my email address (via PM)? I wouldn't know where to start with torrent!

Yeah that's not a problem, there is a couple of Gb so you'll need a good connection or I could find where I got them from originally. If you send a PM today I'll sort it tonight when I get in around 23:00

This any use? www.debugmode.com/wink/I've not used it but it seems to be a freeware interactive tutorial creator. It should work with a touchscreen..

Adobe Flash is really simple to do this sort of thing with the added attraction of really smooth animation and (depending on your content) ridiculously small file sizes.

Assuming it's windows-based, you could use Microsoft Access to create a form and then put buttons on it to do what you want. You'd probably need a little vba code, which is quite like BASIC form years ago. I can help if needed!

+1 for the suggestions of doing it in HTML. Design icons, make icons link to other pages, job done. Far and away the simplest option. Should take about ten minutes, including learning HTML

Thanks for all the comments guys. After spending a few hours creating the main logos, I then headed over to Powerpoint to see what I could do. I think it's pretty much the answer I'm looking for. It seemed a bit too restrictive and linear at first, but I think I've got it sussed enough now to make it work pretty much how I want it. Obviously there are some things I'm a bit limited to, but it's pretty good and I should be able to make it act pretty much how I was anticipating even if some of the actions aren't exactly how I'd like. I'll get a video of it once I get the initial batch of icons finished, the timings sorted and some other changes. This'll only be the start of it though....I'm hoping I can make this an ongoing project. Just for the hell of it! Many thanks again for all your input so far.
