Price: 300
Additional Information:
I bought this with the intention of using it as a track day car, but I probably won't be doing any of those until the spring so it's going to be sitting around most of the winter. My old Rover has just failed the MoT quite badly and is going to cost a fair bit to put right, so I've put this up for sale to raise some cash, with the intention of buying another in the spring if finances allow.
It's a UK market MX5 with the 1600 engine. It was owned by a lady of a certain age before I bought it - she loved the car but had had to buy something with four seats to ferry the grandkids around.
It starts on the button and runs well, with no sign of overheating, smoke or other misbehaviour. As you would expect from the price tag, though, it isn't perfect. Here is a list of the faults:
-The clutch is fine under normal conditions but can lose pressure in intensive use (crawling along in traffic or prolonged manoeuvring). I've bled the system which has made it a bit better, but it still isn't quite right. I've bought a new slave cylinder which is included but which I never got around to fitting - living out in the sticks the clutch didn't cause me any problems.
-It needs a new NSR shock fitting - there is a brand new one in its box in the boot ready to go on. The OSR has already been done, but I never got around to doing the nearside, and it's too cold and damp for me to want to attempt it now.
-Bodywork isn't too bad but the paint could do with a good polish, and there's a bit of lacquer peel on one of the front wings - not overly noticeable though. Sills have been welded in the past.
-A few bits don't work - the electric windows (motors still work but the glass doesn't move - can be raised and lowered by hand though); the headlights have to be raised and lowered manually as the relay has gone; and I haven't managed to get the doors to lock from the outside (not really tried too hard though as it's not much of an issue where I live). The boot opens fine off the key though. All the lights work OK, as do the wipers, indicators, horn, heater etc.
-The hood is getting a little tired - it still keeps most of the weather out but does leak a little round the edges in heavy rain. It still folds up and down fine though. The plastic rear window is also getting rather cloudy.
I've probably made it sound like a right old heap, but with a weekend's work someone more competent than me could probably have it pretty much sorted. As long as you don't run into any heavy traffic I'd trust it to drive pretty much anywhere, and it is a fun little thing to blat along a B-road in.
Here's a picture:
I'd like to see £300 for it - I paid more than that for it and have since bought a slave cylinder and a replacement battery. It's now parked at my garage in north Norwich as its space on the driveway at home has been usurped by an ageing Jaguar (yes, I do have issues).
