Hi Guys, I have a 1987 Golf GTi 8v which has been off the road for 10 years. I have spent the last few months trying to get it on the road with one problem being that no fuel is travelling past the main fuel pump under the vehicle. The accumulator box is being supplied fuel by the lifting pump, however it appears the main pump is faulty.
I replaced the pump and accumulator box with brand new units and the car started However after a few days same problem - no fuel past this area.
So, having tested the electrics, earth, etc etc I discovered new fuel pump is shot. THis made me wonder, why is new pump failing so quickly?
So I took off new pump and accumulator box and it became apparant that there was a thick oily like substance in with the fuel. However not oil as such, but thick and very very black.
Anyway, removed lift pump and can see that rubber hose that returns the fuel from the return feed back into the bottom of the tank has almost completly dissolved. Strange that VW would make a component that dissolves in petrol if it is meant to sit in petrol all its life. So swapped the entire lift pump unit with another working one....., few days later the same is happening to this ones rubber piping - starting to dissolve!!!
so, has anyone else experienced this? Has this led to your fuel pumps getting blocked up then burning out? Any help much appreciated! Luke
