Hi there, my 1.3 Mk1 golf has started randomly cutting out at speed, it cuts for a second or two then fires back up again. The warning light on the temp gauge (which I think is just an oil pressure light) then flashes at me for a few seconds and the car carries on as normal. Anybody more clued up than me know what it might be? I was thinking maybe a fuel pump problem?

With engine running grab hold of the carb / air filter and try moving it. If the engine then faulters you can bet it's the rubber insulating block between the carb and manifold that has deteriated and lets air in when flexed such as under cornering / acceleration. Happened to my on my MKI 1.3 GLS so when the replacement MKII 1.8GL auto started doing the same I knew straight away where to look.

Another thing to look out for on mk1 golf's is rust in the tank from the filler neck corroding , check the fuel filter for signs , then put your hand on top of the filler neck and feel for corrosion. All the crud from the road gets stuck up there and slowly corrodes the metal , then it drops down into the tank and dragged up the lines!
Remedy : Tank off , cleaned out , new filler neck , blow out the fuel lines , clean out the carb , and new fuel filter.

Thanks for the tips guys, I tried moving the carb with the engine running, there seems to be a lot of movement but the engine doesn't splutter at all when I do it. I checked the filler neck, seems fine, and the filter looks clean to my inexperienced eyes. I might try changing the fuel filter anyway, but I'm thinking if it was that it would probably lose power rather than cut out all together and then fire up again like nothing happened? Any other ideas?
