i see a few for sale ads along the lines of its pre 60 so just insure it and get free tax , is this the case now or do you need a mot prior to registering a imported vehicle
its just ive got my eye on one , if it could sit legaly in my parking bay it would make it much easier to make roadworthy at my leisure

afaik, you would need to mot a fresh import, then when you have the v5c - it's up to you if you want to mot it or not
so any 'field finds' with old buff / missing logbooks are going to need mot'ing before they hit the road

Nope.I've had 2 imports cleared on insurance, £55 cheque, Id & original docs only..
Awaiting V5c & reg numbers- but they have confirmed clearance.

Really? I thought they needed an initial Mot in order to confirm that the vehicle being registered on paper is the same as the Physical vehicle, but were then Mot exempt after that.
Interesting, and slightly odd, if you're right. Maybe as it's all so new you slipped through the net while DVLA are unsure of the new rules?

I've got a car I need to register as its been off road so long it's never been on the computer system and as far as I understand it will need an mot to be registered

Agreed, awaiting the docs from DVLA for my 1958 Series 1 Landy chassis to test theory. Went into the DVLA with all the numbers, filled out the form and payed the £55, was told MOT was no long required and the V5 should be with me in 14 days Madness if you ask me and I look forward to seeing lots of Amercian death traps on the road .NOT |

If this is the case this is probably worse than 1st feared with regards to people being able to drive some old shitter until they get caught.

Well I've had the discs back for 2 Uk registered cars- both done online. One was registered 1988 -but in the notes it confirmed manufactrued 54; so they picked that up OK.
Neither MOt'd in several years.
We'll see if the discs come through for the foreign imports Ok in the next few days
Anticipate increased Fed 'awareness' of old cars this winter..

Be under no illusion as stated above. Both VOSA and the Police will be monitoring this very closely I'm told.
The vehicle has to be roadworthy before it can hit the road or even technically as the OP put it sit on the road.
I also suspect the insurance will have any vehicle inspected very closely in the event of a crash/payout claim. We know how they like any excuse not to pay out.

My Austin 1300 was re-imported in the 70s and never re-registered.
I just filled out the details on the V55 and a new logbook arrived, now this could be due to them checking the old system but I doubt it.

I might as well give it a try then,it will be road worthy but it would be handy to have it registered so when i get it ready I can just use it without having to wait for the dvla to give me a tax disc

So let me get this right for my own situation.
My car, built in '51 and on the road, the mot ran out in October this year, I've not re mot'd it as I don't use it during the winter but was under the impression that I'd have to mot it for it to become mot exempt, eg, it has to be mot'd during or after the transition on nov 18th to be classed as exempt.
Is this true? Or is my car legal to use now without me putting a test on it?
If so, surely that's pure madness!

Though the best way to ensure that is to get someone independent to do a series of safety checks. Maybe at a garage that have a load of pre-set criteria they follow  As an owner of an expired MOT pre-60, it's incredibly tempting to take it for a semi legal blat, but I expect I will get it tested to help keep attention off of me from VOSA and Avon & Somerset Constabulary and for peace of mind that I'm relatively safe. |

Well that's why I thought it'd need a current mot to become exempt, to stop people dragging cars out of fields and just driving them regardless of condition. It's just common sense. Aha! Hang on, the doovla and common sense never go together.. to sum up, my car is "legal" or would be if I could get the wipers to work.. So who let the crazys out and start making up the rules?!? |

Crazy YES
Should a car need a MOT if it has been VOR for a period of time YES
However I am not going to drive my family around in a death trap, I spend thousands keeping my cars in tip top condition...........Although after saying that I will still be paying the £30-£40 every year to have my car MOT, for peace of mind.
