Been out side in the nice fresh cold winter air dismantling bits to get at my duff starter motor on my beemer 520i. From outside looking in engine looked a peach. Started to dismantle and horrors began. Previous owner aka bodge artist had refitted phlenum chamber with just the nuts in the centre the easy ones so going to replace all of them on rebuild. Got to starter motor and its held in literally by one bolt which is a male torx hence need to order a female set to hold it while i take remaining nut off. just done 400 mile road trip never missed a beat but lurking under the bonnet was potential disaster. Ive not come across such stupidity or sheer bodging big time for years. Luckily all can be rectified. Anyone else come across this madness?

Early BMW are well made strong cars that can take a lot of bodging, which can be a worry when buying!

The starter motor on my old Capri was bodged on. It fell off while waiting to get over the Severn road bridge.

When I removed the old dead engine from my L200 pickup the bell housing was held on by 4 bolts two of which were the starter mounting bolts. Resulting in it only having one bolt on the left handside of the engine. I was a little bit shocked to say the least especially as 2 of those 4 bolts were only finger tight.

with the starter on the bench you should be able to make it turn. Clamp the starter in a vice and connect the vice to the battery negative with a jump lead the connect plus 12 vs to the large terminal and flash across to the solonoid terminal with a screwdriver or similar. The gear should spring outward and then start turning. Don't hold it for long though as with no load the starter will spin very fast and if allowed to for too long it will burn the brushes out.

yeah done that and just as you describe as it just stopped suddenly with the clicking I'm hoping it was just temporarily stuck bendix and shaft very dry so will grease on refit hoping from there a result checked earth strap like you said its tight and good condition starter as never shown signs of giving up / strange noise till that really sharp frost battery is hd bosch two years old fully charged

Hello old bean, no such problems with the old 525ix you had off me, you had a good one there eh!. Don't grease the bendix and shaft as it will probably gum up, we used to wash them with petrol or brake cleaner then dust them with graphite powder, lubes them but nothing sticks to it. if you get stuck drop me a line and i'll have a look for you.

I confess I'm guilty of a bodge atm on Ary, my Land Rover S3 109"
The rear pan on teh salisbury diff is currently sealed with bathroom silicone sealant!
But this was done as it was 4pm on a sunday, and needed the Landy back on the road to get to work with last week (& this week tbh)
Once my Imp is back in the next couple of days Ary will be getting the diff re-sealed properly!!

If it was held in by one bolt it might be that the starter was not sat straight and the bendix was jamming, I have heard of that happening. I am assuming there is a relay in the starter circuit, it might also be that playing up.

I used to have a black Mk2 XR2 which I traded in a Nova SR for....I loved that car, despite top end disintegrating after 2 weeks. The garage fixed this but when I put it through the MOT I was taken into the inspection pit to witness the fact that the passenger side rear suspension was held together by a 1 inch square piece of metal which had been welded on!!!!!!

my w123 had been owned by a serious bodge artist. the worst of it was when i got the car up in the air and found about 5 areas where the floors and sils had rusted through and he decided to fix it with fiberglass then paint over it. He was quite into buying after market curse word like LED's and installing them too, you should have seen the pile of wires that i pulled out of it.

I bought a TransAm once then drove it 300 miles home.
Not only was the majority of the rear half ofthe car made of wag, the engine and gearbox were held in with one loose bolt each.
